So I know a lot of these comments are 9+ years old and this information wasn’t available back then but back in 2019 avenged sevenfold themselves started a video series called Avenged Sevenfold presents: Breakdowns where members of the band use computer software to pull apart a specific song piece by piece, one of the first songs they did was nightmare and this should clarify all the arguments in the comments, 1. The final recordings on the entire album were 100% done by Mike Portnoy, 2. Although jimmy “the rev” Sullivan does appear on the album only his vocals do none of his drumming, 3. The rev did indeed write most of the drum parts for this album, 4. The rev recorded the initial demo for this song and you can hear the difference in the 2 drum charts if you listen to the demo and the final version, 5. No where in the recording process did avenged tell mike he needed to play it as close to jimmy’s playing as possible instead what they said was they wanted him to keep jimmys drum chart overall but wanted him to add his own flare to the song and make the drum track a Portnoy drum track and not just him covering jimmys part this is apparent in parts like the chorus where mike added the ride cymbal pattern and with his Tom fills going into the verses and final chorus, 6. If you watch mike playing this song he does indeed use a variety of various toms in the beginning, so as far as grinz’s chart goes it’s actually very very accurate based on what I’ve seen from videos of mike playing and avenged isolating parts of the song and talking about it
