Ambedkar meets Gandhi : A Complex Encounter | Ashok Gopal
The talk
#ashokgopal talks about the dynamics between Dr. B.R. #ambedkar and Mahatma #gandhi . "Ambedkar versus Gandhi" is a commonly held view, based on popular narratives of their encounter in 1932, which led to the Poona Pact on political representation for the Depressed Classes. In one narrative, Gandhi emotionally blackmailed Ambedkar to agree to unfavourable terms. According to a contra interpretation, Gandhi won over Ambedkar with his soul force. Ashok Gopal contends that both views are flawed: The Ambedkar-Gandhi encounter was complex. Ambedkar always engaged with Gandhi's core ideas though he explicitly departed from them. Still, despite their deep differences, the two engaged in dialogue and shared some common principles and concerns.
Ashok Gopal
A graduate in history from Pune University, Ashok Gopal worked as a journalist for 15 years before moving into the development sector as a consulting writer, editor and researcher. Over the last 12 years, he has been involved with a school-based initiative to promote the development of Constitutional values and related competencies through activity-based learning. Ashok Gopal’s biography of Ambedkar A Part Apart (2023, Navayana) is based on a study over more than a decade of the published writings and speeches of Ambedkar in English and Marathi, other primary sources, and works of Dalit Marathi archivists. Kancha Ilaiah, called it "a great book about the greatest modern intellectual of India".

India has a pretty large armed force and the future wars require less personel because use of technology. It is for this reason that India needs to keep a lean and mean defence force. Also the pension of a big armed force has a significant hit on the budget of the armed force especially with greater life expectancy. So this is a step in the right direction. In fact govt and state govt should also follow a similar thing in there civil services and should not have such a large man power who eats the govt budget in pension also.

This talk is good and enlightening on certain aspects of Ambedkar's thought. There is another not so well known but very productive association between Gandhiji and veteran atheist activist, freedom fighter and Gandhian Gora from Atheist Centre, Vijayawada. A book by Gora 'An Atheist with Gandhi' was published by Navjeevan Trust which is very insightful about the revolutionary personality of Gandhi. It would be useful if you can arrange a talk on this interaction by contacting Atheist Centre, Vijayawada. Atheist Centre, Vijayawada with its various social change voluntary Organisations works on Gandhian principles for criminal reformation, upliftment of women and Dalits and artisans. Ms. Chandana Chakraborty visited Atheist Centre a couple of times and Late Prof. Bhargava also visited Atheist Centre. I volunteer to foot some expenditure if this programme is arranged.

Absolutely no commentry on movie like Karnan or Mani Ratnam movies, Jai Bhim.... Zero discussion on Caste. Does he talk about Amol Palekar movie starring Sonali Bendre Anaahat movie or Marathi movie industry "Mulshi Pattern". Didn't visibly show respect for other Film industries from Malayalam or Tamil films. He is more fixated on elitist classical view of Rich class of people their display of civility. Lacks understanding of more nuanced film making. And his views do not help understanding to audience who are born in 90s or 2Ks. But I really loved listening to how cinema influence our actions and quoted research.

Unless these proscriptions and prescriptions are explicitly edited away there is no way to reverse the destruction wreaked on the adherents and those with the misfortune of being in its cross-hairs.
