Great video Mike!
Are you running anything special in order to have an antigravity battery? Or just stock charging system works okay?
no you need to change out your regulator for one that is updated and will not over charge your antigravity battery.
Good idea but looks ugly on top of the cylinder
Looks like crap,..especially that wire loom, which not doubt turn to dust innthe sun.
Can I use stock cdi?
Reach out to Murray at murray@murrayscarbs.com I made the video for him. Not the tech guy.
I bought a pair of coils from the Far East for £8.50 each via eBay, direct replacements for the old OEM ones. Solved my hot starting problem. I think these in the video are very exposed, look ugly, and easily damaged. Very good, well produced video though, even if (IMHO) the product wasn’t!
Love my quickset tool. And you video is fantastic. Thank you
It works on a GL500 ?
Yes
This is cool but what happens when I have to change the spark plugs?
very nice 😊😊🌟🌹🌹🌹
Honestly I don’t care if they work great, they look really ugly!!!, there are better coils replacements on the market and probably cheaper though! (easier to install too)
Why make an ugly bike even uglier with these things sticking out to side. Looks like shit. Keep the motor clean by keeping the coils under the tank!
Any videos showing off the bike or a walk through? I bet a lot of people would love to see and learn more about it, myself included of course.
I still laugh at every time I watch this!!!
Would anyone know where I can buy ignition coils for my 1981 Honda cx500. 2 cylinder
I have a set of original coils I would sell you
Mike Meyers ill buy 1000% I cant find a dang thing
Want my email?
Zachary Gordon that will work

Whare can I buy this tool
EightyGibbons 0 murrayscarbs.com/product/honda-cx-and-gl-valve-quick-set-tool/
just ordered some today cant wait to install them is there any complication with removing them if i have to work on the vavles?
No, not at all they come off with the valve covers.
@@Blur0330 do you know any tanks that also fit the frame of the cx500
Key the only one that will “fit” is the one that came with your bike. But with modifications many tanks will fit. Mine was a cx custom but modified a cx deluxe tank and my frame to get it to fit.
good job nice video +1
My goodness, this is the sexiest motorcycle I have ever seen in my life! I'm building on a CX500 now and this is the gold standard. I can't achieve results like these, but it's nice to look at!
Eric, Thanks for the kind words.
Awesome video man! Where can I get one of those square socket tools for the adjuster screws?
I have looked all weekend long, I bought it 10 years ago and cannot remember where I purchased it. If I remember I will send you a link.
It's not possible to make bikes like this and sell it...you sell your heart,too...you make a great job.I like very much your bike and i know how many value a cx has.I had a cx for 34 years...years of happiness...then the engine crashs...no possible to repair it .I look for a engine but i found a same year bike...with half km of my old bike!Same colours, same seat, rims, best engine sound. Now i weared it with my exhausts, tyres, directyonal ligths, handle bar,mirrors...and my bike runs again! Don't sell your baby.Enjoy it!
I'm looking at maybe buying a Silverwing gl 650. The owner tells my it needs the changing of a Coil pack. Not sure which one is the coil pack in your video? (The doohikie under the seat or the Spark Plug cover?) Any pointers would be appreciated coming from a pro. Cheers!
Cy Lor the dookies under the seat are the old stock coils. I did an upgrade to the coil packs. You can do either. Replace the coils or do the upgrade.
@@Blur0330 HEY! Thanks for calling. I'M a little confused. The work you did eliminates the "dookies" under the seat and incorporates them into the single job you did on the top of the spark plugs??
Cy Lor yes. The old coils were replace with these coil on packs.
@@Blur0330 That's awesome thank you very much!
Quite possibly the best mechanical DIY video on the web. Outstanding!
Cyrille Loreau , ain’t mechanical, it’s electrical
Hi, I have a cx500 too. What's the point of doing all that job ? thanks , Gus
To replace/upgrade the aging coils. You can sometimes find old stock but your still using 35 year old parts.
Thank you !
this is retarded lol....i love it
I just now decided to see if you had a youtube channel..
You're my hero! your motorcycle has been my computer background picture for like 2 years. And it's the reason I bought a cx500c :)
Thx Brendan, it was a truly enjoyable process. Still running great.
wow! fantastic
So to tighten up the cam chain you just loosen the tensioner bolt give it a couple whacks and tighten again?
That's the funniest BS I have seen in a long time. One hand to "pull the rope", one to push the starter button.
I bought the tool, cheers. So with dong it this way, valve clearance is set on compression stroke?
Yes

I just acquired an '81 in decent shape and I'm going through the mechanicals. I own air cooled Volkswagens, so I understand the how to, but not the why for this motor. Because of the heat / cooling cycles of the air cooled motor I expect to adjust the rockers on my VWs. I would expect the heat / cooling cycle of a liquid motor to be less drastic and the period between adjustment longer. From what is described, the interval is the nearly the same as the VW. I was surprised to see that.
This lovely bike uses what front and rear wheel hubs? Also the braced front guard, is that the custom BMW one?
Front and rear hubs and rims are off a 1977 Honda Goldwing. The front mud guard is a cut down customized front fender off a 1978 Yamaha XS 650

How often should one adjust or check their gaps? Every 10k miles?
The official shop manual recommends every 3600 miles
Amazing Build!
Thanks
There was a site reffering to you as an artist. I think they are right....
cx/gl500's way too cold blooded to pull start, how many times did you have to pull it over before it popped off?
and how much ether did he squirt into the airbag??
I call BS!! You can not pull start a CX. Plus you have to remove the clutch release just to do what you're saying. This would make it so you could never shift it
Wow really? Yes Mark it is a joke.
And Hello Mike, Murray informed me that you two made this together as a joke. Nice one LOL. I understand that you are still getting request to order this pull starter LOL
Congratulations, I hear it's an awesome Mission and I'm sure you'll love every minute of it.
I have put this on the Facebook page LDS Mission Calls. facebook.com/ldsmissioncalls
Remove the key from the ignition. (keeping it far away from the bike until your completely done) Remove the spark plug caps. Remove the cylinder head covers. Remove the spark plugs. Remove the crankshaft hole cap from the transmission cover. Choose a cylinder to start.(you can start on either one, it is recommended to start own the left side.) Turn the crank (clockwise) until you see the intake valves go down. (the intakes are the ones near the carbs or the back of the bike) Turn the crank slowly until you see the intake valves rise to their peak, then continue to turn the wrench (clockwise) one half-turn. (this will bring the motor past TDC) Install the Quick-Set Tool in the spark plug hole just by hand until it seats. Slowly turn the engine backwards (counter clockwise) until it comes to rest against the Quick-Set Tool and stops. Adjust the valves. (if you are working on the left cylinder, this would also be a good time to adjust the timing chain.) Loosen the cam chain tensioner lock bolt. When this is loosened, the cam chain tensioner should automatically position itself to the correct cam chain tension. In that these bikes are getting older it is a good practice to use a bit of wood and a dead blow hammer to give it a few taps to loosen the cam chain tensioner mechanism. Retighten the bolt to the correct torque settings. Adjusting the valve settings, by loosening the lock nut, and turning the screw until there is a slight drag on the feeler gauge. Hold the screw and tighten the lock nut. Recheck the valve clearance once again before moving on to the other side. Valve settings CX500 IN: 0.08mm (0.003in.) EX: 0.10mm (0.004in.) CX650 IN: 0.10mm (0.004in.) EX: 0.12mm (0.005in.) Turn the motor forward (clockwise) just a smidgen to relieve the pressure off the Quick-Set Tool, then unscrew it. Watch the valves on the other cylinder until the intakes go down. Turn the crank slowly until you see the intake valves rise to their apex, then continue to turn the wrench (clockwise) one half-turn. (this will bring the motor past TDC) Install the Quick-Set Tool in the spark plug orifice just by hand until it seats. Slowly turn the engine backwards (counter clockwise) until it comes to rest against the Quick-Set Tool and stops. Adjust the valves. Turn the motor forward (clockwise) just a fraction to relieve the pressure off the Quick-Set Tool, then unscrew it. Now it is time to put it all back together. Install the crankshaft hole cap on the transmission cover. Install the spark plugs. Install the cylinder head covers. (coat the cylinder head cover bolt rubbers with oil before tightening, make sure you did not lose the center round gasket) Install the spark plug caps. That is it Go for A Ride! Valve adjustments are much faster, following this procedure you cannot set the valves on wrong (exhaust) stroke. You no longer need to use the align the marks on the rotor. www.murrayscarbs.com
+Mike Meyers Thanks for the video and instructions. I wanted to get some input on the cam chain tensioner adjustment. The CX500 forum wiki states " If you previously arrived at the TL mark by even slightly rotating the engine backwards with the front bolt, go back and approach the TL mark from the clockwise direction... " Just want to know if adjusting the tensioner using the instructions here with a counter clockwise arrival at TDC is ok. Thanks.
Yes it is.
Mike Meyers hi Sr...i have a 1983 cx650C I hope you can help me to set the valves gap right...your video it's great but I don't have the quick set tool and the way I did it was I turn the engine until gets to the mark TR or TL and I wanna know if that's correct and if you can tell me the spec for the timing chain please...I see on another tutorial that we need to get the mark F so I'm really confuse please help
Dear Mike, I like this bike very much. How would you price this bike, assuming it's for sale?
It is not for sale. To build such a bike depending on someone skill set upwards of 10k
Thanks Mike
I am grateful for you ingenuity. If a pull start is a must, then a must it is. I didn't even know this was possible. So, great job.
I'd rather run a supercharger off that pully....
I like the idea, but a CX500 is still light enough to bump start the old-fashioned way, so don't see many people doing it.
you should totally enter that bad ass pull starter in the mod of the month contest! www.caferacer.net/forum/ichiban-moto/

I followed your meticulous, well documented build. Very nice work, you should be very proud as it looks great.
Thanks I had a great time building it
