FAQs - What Questions Should I ask my Pelvic Organ Prolapse Surgery Before My Procedure?
In this video, I answer an FAQ I get from women, asking about what questions they should ask their surgeon to prepare for their surgery. I give a few reminders about how to choose a good surgeon (avoiding large amounts of mesh), and then suggest asking questions about the procedures that will be done, what the recovery will be like, how long your surgery will take, whether you will go home with catheter or packing, whether you will be prescribed pain medication, and whether you can expect to have stitches on the outside. I also suggest fully researching and considering the idea of a hysterectomy if you are encouraged to have one.

Hello,You mentioned in one of your video that your ovaries shut down after your hysterectomy. Did you had a specific test or a blood draw to figure that out? Or you were saying that from the symptoms you were having? Do you mind sharing what that test was if in fact was a blood draw?

    • @personalprolapsestory
      @personalprolapsestory Před dnem

Hormone diagnoses should definitely be mostly symptoms based, as bloodwork isn’t that reliable for diagnosis (varying hormone levels through the month, ranges are not specific for ages, and “normal” may not be optimal. I would encourage you to watch all of my hormone videos, as well as my most recent one about considerations for hysterectomy. I talk a lot about it in there.

Ya' know what question I asked my surgeon? Now, we talk about all kinds of things not about medicine which is good. I think it is anyway. I joke with him and he knows I'm kinda crazy anyway. For example, I told him doctors do not deliver babies. Mom and baby do all the work and the doctor just witnesses; hahahahahaha, and gets paid; hahahaha. Anyway, this is a question I recently asked him. I said, "Dr. [ ], if you had a complete life do over from childhood, with what you know now, would you wish to be female?" He took a second, looked at me with complete honesty and answered, "no". I replied with a resounding '"thank you!". He is a great surgeon but now I respect him even more as a person because he knows - as much as he can - that it is not easy for us with problems specific to us. I just had cystocoele repair, July 1st., and my GI is still asleep. I've always had constipation issues but this is just another challenge. My post op is next week and hope that all that is supposed to be "tied up" is just that. I had the little mesh thing put in. We'll see.

Thank you for providing me a little laugh, and a lot of validation. My surgeon, who I also have a lot of respect for, told me that he instructed all of his daughters to have elective C-sections when delivering their children. He explained that any “damage” you could cause from a C-section is nothing compared to what you can potentially face after vaginal deliveries gone wrong. Women really do have a rough road, and we are always having to advocate for ourselves, because we are often not taken seriously. Thank you for sharing! I hope that everything goes well with your recovery. I’m sure you are doing everything you can to get your bowels moving, so I don’t have much advice on that. it is concerning though, as constipation is one of the number one causes of cystic and pelvic organ prolapse in the first place. 🫣

We eat a carnivore diet which keeps stools on the softer side so that is good. Just hope my surgeries last for the next twenty years. I'll be in my eighties then. This is what MANY doctors want to do, but they’re a bandaid fix, your bladder will fall again, and THOSE can cause issues with sex. I’m hoping you live close enough to a metro area that you can find a urogynecologist or vaginal surgeon to do native tissue repairs, where they instead repair the structure of your vaginal wall. Mine is actually TVT (trans vaginal tape). Much smaller. Much thinner. Designed to kind of “meld” with your own tissue over time. This is the preferred/safest method of treating urinary incontinence… but, it does require a suprapubic catheter during recovery in most cases. So, the recovery is a bit more difficulty, but the long term safety and results are preferable.

Hello, Friend. I’m your new fan at 61 just now addressing a cystocele, rectocele, and bladder incontinence surgically after everything else failed. My last baby just turned 22. I’m a physical fitness buff with a solid core (my urogynecologist noticed my improvements first) and discovered the hard way that certain exercises cause way too much leakage. I had my procedure at 7:30 am yesterday, June 4. I was discharged at noon from the actual hospital, complete with a private room, unlike every other same-day procedure I’ve ever had. My Foley catheter is the biggest problem. It’s uncomfortable all the time. My butt feels as though I was anally raped. Ironically, the vagina which contains all the sutures is not an issue as long as the pain meds are on board. Sitting is impossible with the catheter in, but it will be removed Friday, 6/7. I have no doubt that being physically fit is serving me well through all this.

All I can say is THANK YOU for your candor and love to the rest of us. God bless you and your family.

I’m so glad you found my channel helpful!! I couldn’t find the info I was looking for before my surgery, so I decided to create it myself. I have heard from so many women. I’m glad it has helped them, but it has also helped me feel less alone. I hope you check out more of my videos to be as informed as possible before and after. I’ll be doing a 3 year update and a specific video about urge incontinence I’ve been struggling with, soon. Stay tuned and good luck with your procedures. I’ll be praying for you!

You have no idea how much you helped me! I’m two weeks out from same surgery and have started having pelvic and lower back pain that has kept me from getting anything done due to the irritating pain. Now I know what it is! Hypertonic pelvis! THANK YOU!!!!! 🙏 Soo grateful for you!!

Hi. Yes, it’s likely hypertonic muscles and scar tissue in your pelvic floor pinching nerves. I’d advise you to find a qualified and specially trained pelvic floor PT in your area and start seeing them. Once they train you, you can do exercises at home. In the meantime, you can try to palpate (apply pressure) to the are down there from the outside. I prefer doing it in the bath. Many of these muscles can be released from pressing around the pelvic floor area from the outside.

Thank You again for your insight. I am having same surgery as you. Hysterectomy, sling and a urethropexy. Not looking forward to recovery, but I know I need it to be done.

I cleaned, watered outside and did meal prep for 2 weeks' worth of breakfast and dinner. I just hit week 3 and the place is a wreck and we have no more prepped meals. I wish I'd done more!

Definitely some feel good books, music playlist, shows that are uplifting as the process can be a bit depressing. I’m 4 weeks post op and doing better but I still feel slightly down.

Wow. You have really been through a lot. It is no wonder that you are struggling with your emotions. I would go talk with an herbalist or naturopath and get something for my nerves. I have used supplements for the better part of my life and have found relief for many situations. I just with there was something to fix prolapse but if there is something I haven't found it yet. I go in to visit the surgeon on May 29. Thanks for sharing.

Hi. My prolapses are completely fixed! Even three years later. Many of the struggles that I described in this video were related to being an early hormone failure. Once I was put on the appropriate dose of hormone therapy, most of these symptoms have subsided. I do wish that I had not had a hysterectomy, it put me into early ovarian failure, but as far as my prolapse repairs, I do not regret those one bit.

@@personalprolapsestory Thank you so much. I am 69 and have dealt with bladder problems since I was a child. Three years ago I had my uterus removed because it was outside of my body. It didn't help because now it is my bladder. This helps me a great deal. Thanks.

I know this may sound crazy but I have found snacking on Gummy bears helpd me go easier than just using the stool softeners alone. Not medical advice at all just a tip that helpd me.

Louise, I’m so sorry to hear that you were going through this. I can’t imagine that. Luckily, I did not have voiding issues after my Supra pubic catheter was removed, and I was honestly able to get it out relatively quickly. Did you have an SPC, or just the Foley catheter? The suprapubic catheter is one way to avoid having voiding issues in many cases, but I’m not sure if you had that or not. I don’t know what to suggest other than to KEEP ADVOCATING. Don’t settle for suffering, and get as many opinions as you need to!

I’m suggesting that you call doctor and ask for zofran or compazine, take it before you take the narcotic and it will prevent you from feeling nauseous afterwards. That’s my regimen for my patients in the hospital.
