Rice paper. There are probably newer techniques, but my aunt used to put rice paper on top of frosted cakes, and then paint pictures on it. I think some bakeries now have something that works like a printer for food.

If I'm being honest I don't know why she'd be so opposed to the videos? I've personally always found the Amish way of life interesting and I'd think the videos would make a lot of people in my generation want to get involved in that sort of thing because sometimes, less to no tech is way more valuable. Plus if the modern world were to end I think the Amish would be able to survive it all far better than the rest of us.

I’m so sorry this happened to you. It must hurt so much. You talking about your abusive upbringing, and eloquently explaining what you viewed as normal (and why it’s not in hindsight), will keep helping victims. Even victims who have completely different traumas from upbringing. You talking helps everyone who grew up thinking horrible things are normal.

Eli, seeing this breaks my heart. I'm sorry you lost your father. Unfortunately your father was in a cult. I live near Amish and interact with them frequently. They are very hypocritical people. They look down on "worldly" people, but will do just about anything to get their money. Puppy mills, sell expired food to the poor, hold auctions and list items made in China as "Amish furniture". I read my Holy Bible daily. The Amish are not the purists that they claim to be. In fact some of them use this public perception for profit. None of us are perfect, we are all sinners. Jesus lived as a man, he knows your father's pain. He experienced the temptations of this world. He gets it. Your father is not going to be in Hell because despair got the best of him...he's not. Jesus loves you and he loves your father. Your father doesn't sound like he was a bad man at all. Imperfect? We all are...all of us. I expect you will see him again some day. It's important that you forgive the Amish and how they treated him. This is very important. They don't appreciate what they did in contributing to his death. If you expect your trespass to be forgiven, you must forgive those who trespass against you. Forgive them. That is what Jesus would ask you to do. I know in your heart you are asking Jesus to accept your Father despite his alcohol and despite of him taking his own life. So in return, Jesus would ask that you forgive the Amish. You should feel bad for the Amish with an understanding that they don't recognize their own flawed non-biblical ways. The Bible says judge not, lest you be judged. My experience is that some Amish are in fact judgemental.

Eli i’ve met so many people whose parents cut off contact with them for so many different reasons. I’ve seen them hurt so much because they thought their parents would always be there for them no matter what especially since they did nothing wrong. You are brave for telling the world your story and all I can say is your mom is the one who lost out in the end. You’re not the first person I’ve seen whose family choose religion over them and probably won’t be the last. Keep your head up.

I know that can't be easy for you, man. I'm sorry, that is the situation. I know that with all the hostility there is with my mom, I would still be heartbroken. I still believe we will all be reunited in the end.

Donkeys live wild where I grew up, we would always go out and feed them carrots and apples. They're so gentle and sweet, I never understood how donkeys got a bad reputation.

From all those sick things that I heard that the Amish allow to happen to the young ladies.I wouldn't want to be part of that community one way or the other. They will have to answer to god.
