You’re “way too old” to be attached to comic book movies? I’m 56, and I’m totally invested in the genre. I love my PS3, PS4, PS5, XBox, and Quest. But I’m right there with you on Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys! Though I agree that moderation is paramount. Still, I can’t agree that age is necessarily a determinative factor…why should it be? Picture your suggestion playing out: One day, a person turns, say, 45, and decides they need to start reading The Brothers Karamazov or something from Bertrand Russell? I agree that on a broader scale, we are risking many negative consequences if we abandon the more challenging and storied elements of our cultural history. If anything, I suspect you’re underselling how corrosive this problem actually is. But I don’t think it will change minds to begrudge anyone how they choose to spend their time, regardless of how laudable the intentions of such scrutiny happens to be. The movement away from traditional forms of enrichment and entertainment is inexorable; the best we can do is promote, in the flavor of what you suggested, variety and exposure.

So I guess all of Asia and Europe are nothing but man babies reading comics and manga? The idea in the west that comics are only for kids is the most brain dead thing I’ve ever heard. I do agree that when an adult goes too far with a cultural thing it can be bad but a healthy consumption is fine. We all need healthy hobbies. someone thumbing their nose down at a part of culture is close minded and is part of the reason why we’re so separated from everything we’ve created in this society. we can’t hold on to any part of our culture and yet We yearn for the nostalgic feeling of the past because we’ve made everything in the present so vapid and empty and have no meaning. Everything doesn’t have to be high minded. If we Forget what we loved in the past and we end up with regrets, no joy and no future

Some valid points Greg, but as someone who grew up gaming & a casual comic book guy, it's more of a hobby than anything else I think there's levels to "geeking out" I was more into gaming than comics though & I usually leaned towards story than just the average shooters. RPG's are always a good time for me.

You’re right about getting hooked in your formative years. When I was a kid I got into comics as an escape. I didn’t have a lot of friends and I had a shitty home life. Comics were a relatively inexpensive hobby at the time and they made a lonely boy’s life bearable. I eventually found other boys that liked comics too and got some lifelong friends out of that one thing we had in common. I’m in my 50’s now and have an enormous collection. I’m talking thousands of comics. I still read them to wind down at the end of the work day maybe for about an hour. The icon and name for my goggle account is a comic book reference. Comics can be juvenile but some are quite adult and quite deep and have a really good message if you know what to get As far as the MCU and DCU movies go, I was interested in them at one time. I would n’t say I was geeked out but I looked forward to the next one. After Avengers Endgame I got out of it because the couple I saw after were simply awful. Full of woke girl boss crap.

I know it’s not a popular take, but I definitely agree with you. I don’t understand grown man who gets so geeked out over this stuff.

Comic books were never just written for children. Go back and read the first Superman comic books . . . y'just might learn something about American culture!

I grew up with an Atari 2600, original NES, Sega Genesis, and Super Nintendo. I bought my daughters a switch and play with them maybe once or twice a month. I thought I would be more into it, but it doesn't draw me in anymore.

Great stories are great if well told but there comes a time to move on to greater stories which tell more Truth than comics

I'd add Star Wars & spectating Sports ( except where the players are wearing trousers ( pants) or tobogganing. Music - it's different, but if you're listening to the exact same songs & no new ( or older / different ) music, then that's not progress.

I don't care about comics and comic book movies. I care about good cinema. I want to watch good quality cinema. In my opinion, the casting of Robert was done just to create huge nostalgia. Mcu was declining after end game. Marvel was losing money. On the other hand, the career of Robert after end game was not very remarkable.. He won Oscar but his part in the success of Oppenheimer is not as big as many thing. Oppenheimer was a success because of Nolan. People watch Nolan,s movies for his work, not for the stars.. Robert also needed something big. So when Marvel offered him tons of money to play a different role,, he said yes.. It's a win win situation for both.
