The lead guitarist George Harrison sings as well and Ringo Starr set the tempo on his drums.

John, from what I hear, was a bit of a Beatles collector - i think he traded a fan a copy of the butcher album (signed) in exchange for a bootleg of Beatles BBC recordings? Keep in mind this is the days before everything was available in the home market/online so he’s probably watching the original film reel here! (George was filmed watching some reels too in the 70s)
