Episode One: AMERICAN PATRIOT
Jefferson Davis' early years: West Point, military appointment, and his first love and tragically short marriage to Sarah Knox Taylor. After ten reclusive years as a planter, Davis marries again and forges a political path that leads him to Washington City as a Mississippi representative to Congress. He distinguishes himself in the Mexican War and returns a hero. Davis then serves his country in the Senate, as Secretary of War and in the late 1850s, with the stirrings of secession abounding, Davis tries to keep the fledgling nation together but at the end, Davis must side with his home state of Mississippi and departs his beloved Washington City...forever.

    As a Disabled Veteran who served this country - I can see Davis as a historical figure of interest - but I can never call Davis a Patriot. A person that can see a fellow American as mere chattel because of the color of my skin is symbolic of the madness that plagues our nation to this very day.

    Wonderful. Have read much about the Generals and learned much, but only now getting to Davis. Have ordered his memoirs. Still believe that the secessionist states were more correct, but the war should have been avoided.

    Good day, and your description of this book is long-winded but here goes: In 1942 George "Bud" Day, then a scrawny 17 year old, defied his parents wishes and went to his local post office to enlist in the Marine Corps. He was 5"2 short and tipped the scales at just 116 pounds. This did not stop him, who says you have to be tall to be a hero....

    The South fought hard and only surrendered after they were completely beaten and unable to continue. I find that admirable even if the reason for fighting was not.

    Oooooohhh, poor, poor Jefferson Davis went to England after the war, and then didn’t have the money to “live well and mingle with the English epicures”…..so sad when aristocratic wanna-be’s never realize their dreams of world domination. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy…😱🤣😂

  • @21stCenturyComm
    @21stCenturyComm Před 4 měsíci

    The whole theme is that people of the South didn't believe in the cause as much as good old J.D. I don't know how much more the South could have fought or sacrificed or given. Ulysses Grant said it best: "I felt like anything rather than rejoicing at the downfall of a foe who had fought so long and valiantly, and had suffered so much for a cause, though that cause was, I believe, one of the worst for which a people ever fought, and one for which there was the least excuse." Defending slavery was an awful cause for which to sacrifice a generation of youth. The war was about preserving slavery. Tariffs were a constant source of disagrement between north and south, but they weren't fatal. The country wasn't going to split apart because of them.

    It's time for states succession and forming a constitutional Republic of the new America. I believe that we have about twenty five to twenty six states that could succeed from the Un United States. Reasons for this action is because of socialism communism and tyranny. Can't get any worse than this. We the people need to draw the line and take sides. Thank you from Ex Army Veteran.

    Another white washed version of history. How could Davis be remembered as an "American" patriot after leading the Confederacy? A group that committed treason as defined by the Constitution and fought for the right to enslave people. Want to read a good documentary? Read to South Carolina articles of succession which the other southern states adopted as a base for their succession. It clearly states their intentions to preserve slavery and protect their economic interest. Cotton was like oil back then. Davis was extremely fortunate not to be hanged after the south lost their worthless cause, and you Confederate sympathizers should pay Lincoln tribute for that.

    Davis was a slave owner and their world was coming to an end ! No patriotism involved here , just pure greed ! The thousands of poor Confederates , who owned no slaves , who died for a " Cause " that kept them poor ! Rich Plantation owners who did not fight ! No matter how you pull heart strings with this romantic crap and love of state , Robert E. Lee , Thomas Jackson , James Longstreet and Davis and the rest , traitors ! States rights my butt ! Slavery was the backbone of their constitution , don't believe me , just read it ! How about we put a statue of Adolf Hitler in Richmond ? How about we rename Pearl Harbor , Yamamoto Harbor ? How about naming military bases after Native Americans we lied to and stole from that kicked our asses ? Fort Crazy Horse or Fort Sitting Bull ? Not white enough ? How about John Brown High School or Benedict Arnold University / day care center ? They lost because they held up a bible and defecated all over it with their inability to understand that " All Men are Created Equal in the Eyes of God " . God supported the North because the North supported God !

    Although there were no casualties in the 'battle' (for Fort Sumter), during the surrender ceremony and lowering of the flag (striking the colors) US Major Robert Anderson ordered a hundred gun salute, a fire broke out in the magazine and one soldier (Pvt. Daniel Hough) was killed instantly and another (Pvt. Edward Galloway) was fatally wounded (died a couple of days later in hospital). The salute was shortened to a 50 cannon salute. Incidentally, that artillery battery was commanded by Jefferson Columbus Davis, who had fought in the 1846 Mexican War, his unit fought side by side with Jefferson Finis Davis's (later CSA President) Mississipi Rifles. Anderson had been Colonel of Illinois Volunteers in the 1832 Black Hawk War in which he commanded both Capt. Abraham Lincoln (volunteer) and Lt. Jefferson Finis Davis (regular army) in Wisconsin territory. Anderson & Davis escorted Black Hawk and the other prisoners by steamboat to Jefferson Barracks south of St.Louis. Black Hawk praised Davis for his respectful treatment.

    Jefferson Davis was best described by Sam Houston. BS on not waging war on civilians. Hundreds of FREE Black Americans were kidnapped and enslaved. Additionally, many Unionists were wiped out in the Tans-Appalachian region. Davis; whole political career was to expand slavery. A lot of misinformation here.

    It shouldn't have been called a Civil War. "Civil War" is a battle over control of a country. The CSA had no intention of storming Washington D.C. and taking over the U.S. Government. They just wanted to leave. The whole endeavor was like a wife trying to leave her husband. Then the husband finds out where she is, breaks everything she owns, beats here within an inch of her life, and drags her back into the house. And slavery wasn't a crime at the time (it had been legal for hundreds of years in America). Their "crime" was simply trying to leave.
