Community Energy in Essex webinar 29/07/24
Community Energy in Essex
From 1-14 July, we celebrated the work of our community energy groups across Essex as part of the nationwide Community Energy Fortnight. This year, the theme of Community Energy Fortnight focused on empowerment. Community energy projects help to empower local people by giving them control over their energy supply.
Community energy groups not only help towards our journey to become net zero, but they can also support with other areas such as fuel poverty, developing green skills in the community and creating local energy jobs. Essex now has 21 community energy groups and the network is rapidly expanding.
To keep the conversation going, Essex County Council hosted a Community Energy in Essex webinar where attendees had the opportunity to find out more about the role of community energy and how they can get involved.
Agenda:
Welcome from Councillor Peter Schwier, Essex County Council's Climate Czar and Cabinet Member for Environment, Waste Reduction and Recycling
Essex County Council’s Energy and Low Carbon Team: What is community energy and how can local authorities support community energy groups?
Community Energy South: Different types of community energy groups pathways and how local communities can benefit
Christopher Blomeley, Project Director of Community Energy Colchester: Personal experience of community energy and success in Colchester
Q&A
Thank you and closing remarks.

Our school, Southend High for Girls, had quite a few students from Canvey., as did many of our local highschools, both secondary grammar and modern probably did as well. If I recall properly, I believe we had a call to assembly sometime later that day, and our Headmistress, Miss Cowell gave us the news,

Great words Hattie. It's sad that environmental awareness has been around for many many years and yet the governments do so little because it doesn't benefit them personally. Keep fighting 👍🏻

So you will be able to take all that carbon trapped in solid plastics and other waste and successfully release it into the atmosphere as CO2 at a time of climate crisis ... congratulations, by far the most stupid idea ECC has come up with ... (thus far)

A tank engine on a local train heading for Lowestoft was hit on the smokebox by a bungalow carried on a wave of water. The fire was put out and the moon revealed water all around, even covering the tracks on the low embankment. After a while, with the guard's axe and his broken floorboards, the fire was relighted and the train cautiously continued its journey though the rails were covered with water and all in the moonlight.
