Jake Perrett first picked up a pair of drum sticks when he was 10. Jake has being having tuition all his drumming career and has progressed through the Rockschool grades. He is currently a student at The Academy Of Contemporary Music (www.acm.ac.uk) and is regularly taught by the likes of Pete Riley and Frank Tontoh among others.

Recording Musical Drums - Commentary - Christine Corau - Better For Me
Welcome to the first video in a new series I'm filming where I am going to discuss the thought process I go through when recording drums for different artists from my home studio. This first track is 'Better For Me' by UK singer-songwriter Christina Corau. This was one of 4 songs I recorded for her 2024 album release.
This is the commentary video but please do check out my other videos. A performance video and a more in-depth video where I discuss the key features of the song and explain why I made the choices that I did in the final recording of the song.

I absolutely love this song and seeing as it's quarantine time I thought I'd learn more about Ableton and it's live-looping abilities! great drumming and musicality Jake! The way you are playing the ride cymbal is very enlightening. I noticed you are using a Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 for recording, I also own one. I wondered how you are setting it up to work with modern OS since its no longer supported, or are you recording on a dedicated old OS settup? Thanks Jake!
Hi Toby, thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the video. For my OS, I have a 2015 iMac running Monterey. Then using a firewire to thunderbolt adaptor to get around the missing firewire input. I've also been able to use this on my 2019 MacBook Pro running Ventura. No problems on either. I'd love to upgrade to a silicon chip but don't want to get a new interface at the same time and looks like these won't work on the new OS. The workaround I guess would be to buy a newer small audio interface with ADAT capability that is supported, then you use that as a converter, and the saffire for it's pre-amps.
Can you say the internal size of the room?
I can't remember exactly what it was (I've moved house since then and have a new room) but looking back at the video just now, I think it was around 2.4m x 1.8m.

Hi Matt, thanks for watching. I think it was a little over £2000. However it was in 2018 and material is quite a lot more expensive now but hopefully that gives you a rough guide. I had to buy a few tools here and there as well.
Did you fix the stud walls to the block work? I'm currently doing my garage now
I am currently watching the video but what is the internal dimensions of your drum room after it was all built? My house has a lean to shed and was thinking of doing something similar and partitioning off a portion of it to set up a drum room as well
That reminds me of building the walls in Lisa's London studio in 2 days flat having driven from Wales with all the tools!

Harry Bent Hi Harry, thanks for getting in touch! I can’t remember the exact dimensions but it’s going to be around 2.4m x 1.8m. Plenty big enough for a 2x1.6m drum mat with space either side. I’ve got a video about how I built it if you wanted to hear about that as well!
