5 Indie Games You Should Look Out For
I have a confession. I am addicted Twitter, and over the past few years I've tried to reduce my time on the platform through various means. However; one day I wanted to try something different, so I took the tools Twitter gave me to try to curate my feed into something I was happy to scroll through, rather than leaving me angry or frustrated. The result of which was the discovery of several in development indie games that have been leveraging these social platforms for some time to try to find their audience. Today I want to share some of these games with you because I really believe there's something special to be experienced with them, and most importantly, I really want to see them finished.

Sea of Stars is Building Towards Something Bigger
zhlédnutí 3KPřed 4 měsíci
For years to come, I'll remember my introduction to Sea of Stars as the start of my favorite gaming memory of 2023. Despite the overwhelmingly positive reception, there was something that threw me off about it - something I think others felt as well. But rather than letting confusion or dissenting opinion color my own perception of the game, I decided to push a bit deeper. Through playing The M...
Is This Pikmin's Turning Point?

To say I was highly anticipating the release of Pikmin 4 would honestly be a bit of an understatement. As a fan of the series since the first entry, Pikmin 4 instantly became my most anticipated game of 2023 the moment it was revealed. Not only that, I previously decided to replay each of the prior games for my previous retrospective before its launch in order to generate as much interest as I ...
F-Zero 99 is the Nintendo I Missed

F-Zero 99 surprised me. While it's initial reveal unearthed some skepticism, after diving into the game for myself, I found I was having the most fun I've had with a multiplayer Nintendo game in years, and a lot of that has to do with what I can only assume was the development philosophy; breath new life into a forgotten IP at the source with a bold, focused, and interesting idea. It's importan...

After almost a entire decade since the release of Pikmin 3, the latest entry in the series is finally upon us. I first played the original Pikmin all the way back in 2001 during its release, and I've been a fan of the series ever since. In 2020, I yelled from the rooftops why Wario NEEDS more games. As it turns out, in 2023, the next best thing (probably better tbh) has arrived. I wasn't fully sold on this game, however, which is why I decided to make th...

I agree that the Switch's UI leaves a lot to be desired, and the Eshop lost all of its personality. The loss of Miiverse also sucks, but something I heavily disagree with in this video is you act like 3rd party games are no big deal. We have gotten some of the best games of all time in portable form on the Switch, like Skyrim, Diablo 3, No Man's Sky, Borderlands 1-3, Persona 5, Nier Automata, Warframe, Minecraft, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Dark Souls Remastered, Both Ori games, Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 3, etc....On top of that, more 3rd party collaborations like you praised with Hyrule Warriors have happened, even with indie developers. The lifeblood of a great platform is its 3rd party support. Nintendo can't keep a platform up by itself, and that's been proven with the Gamecube, and Wii U both. While those two systems have some great games, most of those great games are 1st party, that's not a good thing. Also, most of Wii U's games have been ported to Switch, and nearly all of those ports have more content. So to me, someone who still owns his Wii U, the system is almost irrelevant at this point outside of Xenoblade Chronicles X, the only reason I still own mine. Also, I own a Steam Deck, and am even currently typing this on mine while it's in its $80 dock I bought from Steam (Ridiculous price BTW), and I still buy 3rd party games on Switch, wanna know why? Physical copies. I will never pay full price for a digital Steam game outside of an indie I want to support. With Switch, I'll buy a well made port if it's available physically in a heart beat. I have owned, and still own more games on Switch than any platform I have ever bought games for. There's so many games to play that I seriously can't keep up with them. The system is JRPG heaven for example, and while I love the genre, I can't put 50+ hours into all these games, but I love owning them, and will eventually get to most of them.

I still remember opening and booting up my WiiU on Christmas 2012. From there I created my Mii and enjoyed one of the best launch titles of all time: Nintendo Land. They really need something like this for the switch, I still have that same WiiU from over 11 years ago. Sure its battery sucks, but if you get a battery replacement (which there are tons on ebay) It can easily last for over 3 hours.

I do not miss old Nintendo. The Switch is easily my favorite system and it's not even close. The amount of high quality games I have on my system is more than what I owned between the SNES, Gameboy, Gamecube, Gameboy Advanced, DS, Wii, 3DS, and Wii U combined. Old Nintendo wishes it had this many amazing titles on on system alone. Even the SNES gets a run for it's money when it comes to the sheer quality and quantity on the Switch. Old Nintendo is long gone and thank goodness for that. I'm quite content with modern Nintendo.

Nintendo now are doing great in areas that they were weak back then, but they’ve also taken a bunch of steps back. Unless the next Nintendo system fixes EVERYTHING wrong with Nintendo (hardware power, online service, online connection, third party support) then I’m probably fully done with Nintendo consoles. I’ll just pirate the games and I don’t care if people cry “wahhh emulation bad stahp it”. Don’t blame me because Nintendo decided to make terrible consoles but great games.

Back when I first got my Wii U, it was crazy, I got the 32gb black version with New Super Mario Bros U + Luigi U and the music was a bop, it left more of a lasting impact because of its personality. The switch is fun and all but it really lacks the special charm that Nintendo put into their older consoles. I believe that the reason why the switch is so lifeless is because of the Wii U being a flop and Nintendo thinking that they can’t do anything similar because it might end up being a flop too which is really sad because that stuff made the Wii U special.

I feel exactly the same. Playing wiiu was a whole magic experience, fun, complete, from the moment you turned on the console until you turned it off. The truth is that the Nintendo experience has been downgraded with the Switch. Nintendo's magic was at its peak with the wii/wiiu, ds/3ds. I grew up with NES and SNES and at some extent they're my favorite consoles so this has nothing to do with nostalgia. Thank you Iwata-san!

Outer Wilds' community is simply what a community of thought (Philosophical, Religious, etc) should be. They respect pretty much everyone, and I find that beautiful and admirable. When it released, it gave a window to Nihilistic Optimists and their worldview, and it's a cultural touchstone of that philosophy. It will be discussed for years to come. We're all going to die, the Universe is cold and dark and scary... but the world isn't. Children laugh, games like Outer Wilds exist, and we can choose to be kind in the face of the Universe.

I got into maplestory during the RED update. the update that introduced Zero. So this was late 2014 when it came to GMS. I did much of the same stuff you did. My first class was xenon, i almost couldn't get to lv 30 since i had no idea where i was going or what quests to do so i just did a bunch of them but still felt like i was getting nowhere. It was certainly an experience. I eventually managed to get to lv 30, then 60, then 100, then 140. Hell, it wasn't until at least 2-3 years ago that I was able to hit lv 200 at all. It literally only happened because 5th job lowered the exp requirement But to get back on topic with my oldschool experience, it was much like what you did. I did ludi PQ all the time when i was still in single digit levels. It was so fun. I joined a guild and talked with a bunch of people back in my main server of windia. (Once reboot came out, i migrated to there.) Someone even gave me the gold to do a job change back when i was a buccaneer trying to go back to corsair. The guild did dailies together, things were fun, but when i logged in after a long time, i noticed that even the owner of the guild just kinda went blank. they hadn't logged in in so long that whatever role they were was no longer visible. she was a F/P mage to my knowledge but alas, only to my knowledge. back during those days of RED, the game was crazy fun. I could play it nonstop all day. I remember getting shade to lv 100 in day 1 of his release because i was that invested into the game. I remember watching updates for cannoneer and dual blade release at the same time. the heroes of maple story arc coming out, fucking ELUNA being the biggest hax in the game for leveling up your characters fast. I loved it so much but i know they'll never bring it back. I remember jett before the rework, and then again before they completely deleted him. I remember so much about my time spent playing this game. It was there for me much like how it was for you in a dark spot where you didn't have many friends. I played it pretty dedicatedly for a good 3 years and then moved on to other stuff in 2016 and then came back later in 2019 for about a year. Even now, in 2024, I still pop back in to play the game and see whats new. Mainly when theres a new burning event, i go in and try to max out the newest character at the time. Most recently, this was adele which is just discount irelia from league of legends. I'm ranting on WAY too long but overall what i'm trying to say is that this video resonated with me a lot because no matter how much I could play maplestory now, it'll never be the same game that made me emotional, comforted, and just happy spending a lot of time. It simply can't be that way anymore and while it's sad, i'm overjoyed at the memories i made playing it. lol, actually got teary writing that last paragraph. this game really means a lot to me ❤

Miyamoto insists on having a new “way to play” to justify bringing back old series like Starfox. Well here’s an idea: Make a Starfox Roguelike. Rail shooters are kinda out of style, but roguelikes are in, and it’s new territory for Nintendo. No other Nintendo IP would fit the roguelike genre better than Starfox. You do runs, each run you select ship upgrades, unique enemies and bosses in each section, until you die. Gain some currency to spend on permanent level-ups back at base. Its fresh, would be totally unique in Nintendos IP lineup, and would maintain Starfox’s core gameplay.

AAA titles as of lately have been nothing but corporate greed. Nintendo has a different approach in many things. Pay to play online is an example. I mean yeah we shouldn't NOT pay for online, but we also should not over pay for online pay. I actually pay the yearly nintendo online for 20 dollars, due to my frustration to playstation increasing the online year membership from 59 to 69. Unfortunately nintendo isn't the same as back then, but there's nothing we can do, it makes sense that long time fans are frustrated and I don't blame them.

I'm sorry this must be a generational thing. Because I was an adult when the Wii U came out and the big take aways from the Wii U era were these. Nintendo resting on their loreals the biggest example of that being the stale New Super Mario Bros series that they released two of in the same year. The other thing is the looooong many month long software droughts. The Wii U era was a tough time for us Nintendo fans.

I feel so conflicted about Sea of Stars. (Warning: loooooong comment.) I started gaming in the 16-bit era, so Ninja Gaiden and the whole 8-bit aesthetics don't do anything for me. Yet, I gave The Messenger a try after seeing the positive buzz it was generating. It blew my mind to an astounding degree. It was GENIUS, from all perspectives. I loved how smooth and fluid the gameplay was, I loved the story, I loved the subversion of genres and the cross-generational graphical style. Above all, I loved the writing. And above all the writing, I loved the writing for the Shopkeeper. In reading the Shopkeeper's stories, I got the feeling that Sabotage studios had a stellar writer who was perhaps even a little bit frustrated with having to work on a game that wasn't dialogue-based. I have heard critics say The Messenger is "overwritten", and I agree! I just don't think it's a negative. The Messenger is just not the sort of game that needs to be so well written as it is. So when I heard the next game by the same studio was going to be an RPG, I was like "of course!" It felt natural to me that they'd be working on a genre with more space for the writing to shine. Sea of Stars immediately became my most anticipated game. And for the entire time, from announcement to release, it maintained that status. Not even Zelda Tears of the Kingdom managed to quite capture my hype as much as Sea of Stars. I am not used to feeling hyped for games like this, so I literally didn't know what to do with myself in the last 2 or 3 months leading up to Sea of Stars' release date. Even though I am not a fan of RPGs, the only way I found to tide myself over was to play other indie RPGs, so I started CrossCode. When Sea of Stars finally released, I was around 40% through with CrossCode and I was enjoying it a lot, but I immediately dropped it, of course. I started playing Sea of Stars and… I felt weird. I didn't recognize the writing. More than not recognizing it, after the second or third major area of the game, I had to admit to myself I wasn't really enjoying it. It didn't feel as sharp and creative and bursting at the seams with style. It didn't feel like it had been written by the same team or person that wrote The Messenger. And although the graphics were certainly very pleasing to look at, I was also not enjoying the game itself. I could recognize the battle system was well designed and creative, but it just wasn't captivating to me. Progression wasn't feeling super good. The music was surprisingly not great as well (although certainly far from being bad). I was disappointed. I decided to give it a few days and go back to CrossCode in the meantime. Then, I was surprised by how much more I was enjoying it than Sea of Stars. The game I merely used as a distraction to tide me over to Sea of Stars ended up becoming my favorite RPG of all time, surpassing even Chrono Trigger. As for Sea of Stars, I never got too far past the part when we first encounter The Sleeper. I just watched another video on Sea of Stars, a scathing critique by someone who wanted to like it as much as I did, and it didn't for many of the same reasons I didn't. After watching it and feeling validated, I remembered I had this video in my Watch Later for weeks now, so I decided to watch it as well, for a counterpoint. After watching these two long videos, one full of criticism and another full of praise, I think I'm decided for now: I'll wait for Sabotage's next game. I'll see if it hits me closer to how The Messenger hit me, or closer to how Sea of Stars hit me. If it pulls me into this world, I'll gladly give Sea of Stars another chance, and I'll play it even if for the worldbuilding alone. If not, then… well, at least it indirectly caused me to find and play the best JRPG I've ever known.

You forgot Starlink: Battle For Atlas. Not really a Star Fox game, but all the Star Fox DLC that they threw in there makes it worth at least mentioning.

Thanks for this video.I played EMS around 2007 (pre big bang, pre pirates) and have made some life long friendships from the game. Haven't logged in since 2011 or so and also my account seems to no longer exist, but sometimes I would love to play once again (but the game I used to play, not today's Maple 😅)

Im kinda nervous that the Nintendo Switch successor will somehow be even more minimalistic and bland than the Switch…

Star Fox fans have been asking for more on-rails missions since SF64, and Nintendo seems allergic to it. Adventures had 4 on-rails segments and we wanted more. Assault was only 40% on rails and we wanted more. Command was good but we didnt get anything on-rails So Nintendo's big brain move was to give us another game that was mostly all-range mode and completely nuke the controls In retrospect, maybe it's a good thing they havent touched F-Zero since GX

For Pikmin 5, they should reimpose a time limit that can be extended like in Pikmin 3. But take a page out of Pikmin 2's book and have it be because the company is in debt, perhaps with Louie being "busy" with Olimar, the president had to instead he the one to deliver the shipment of golden pikpik carrots with the huge twist being that the actual is attacked by a ravenous space bunny. By paying off a certain amount of the debt you earn back more time from the loan sharks until you have paid off the debt and go to return to Hocotate. But in a surprise twist, this time it's Olimar who gets unexpectedly left behind, perhaps kidnapped by the Plasma Wraith. So it's now up the the president, Louie, and maybe even Moss to find him and collect more treasure, without a time limit this time.

I loved starfox adventures as a kid. Was actually the first starfox game I've played. It's a shame that it left suched a tarnished reputation to the series. I don't think it was the series deviating from the genre, either. Look at how loved mario RPG games are like paper mario and games like superstar saga. If starfox wasn't used as a blatant replacement for dinosaur planet and had more original sound effects and game mechanics I think it would have gotten better reception even as a series deviation

34:58 i was in 6th-8th grade during old school maple, i used to walk miles to target to get a NX card (only to waste it on gach ot something). Nowadays it might be harder to monetize, but i know for certain if i get on a server with old school exp rates i will RARELY be training without a 4hr 2x exp card. And would be more than willing to invest money (again 🫣) if i knew the game would stay supported for a couple years
