How do you grow potted lotus
Lotus need 6 hours of direct sunlight to flower, so when deciding on a position for your new plant, make sure it has plenty of sunshine. Secondly Lotus are water plants and if your growing them in a pot or bowl make sure you keep the water level 5cm over the soil, but DON'T submerge the leaves.

Use correct size pot with no holes.
Select potting media or soil.
A sunny spot. Lotus like full sun and need at least 6 hours of light per day.
Do not damage the lead growth tip of the lotus tuber.
Add water to planting media/soil.
Gently place tuber on top of soil, cut end at side of pot.
Cover with small amount of soil.
Top off with water to top of growing tip.
Most importantly, the lotus will bloom in bright sunlight. So put it only in a place, that gets a lot of sunlight. There is no need to change the water.
These plants need enough light to photosynthesize. If there is not enough light, lotus plants can rot. Second, give fertilizer once a week. Despite having a unique planting medium, lotus plants still need nutritional intake to support their growth.
Plants started from seed in March may flower the first year, in August and September, while rhizomes planted in containers will flower in July. In our climate, it is best to lift the rhizomes in the fall.
