I remember watching this when I got into music and wondering if I'd ever be able to pull of the pinch harmonics..... this song it is an eye opener, took me years to feel I'd really nailed the ultra precise rhythm, but its infinitely easy if you use the right amp in the right way.... you need a confusing paradoxical combination of super tight, but really quite high gain. 6+dB clean boost into a cranked SansAmp GT2, refining the gain with volume knob or boost. Hit that combo hard with EMGs (18v battery mod works wonders, adds a whole bunch of headroom for the guitars circuitry before it even leave the jack), and you can record DI into a mixing desk with some EQ and perhaps a bit of room ambience, and that's Paul's Herzeleid studio rig! In fact there's a great video online where Jacob Hellner goes through the whole Ich Tu Dir Weh mix session at a university, and he actually shows you Paul's guitars soloed, I didn't believe he was playing a SansAmp PSA-1 direct into the mixing desk until I heard it. I see why, the right settings are super sensitive to your playing, you can hear Paul using a really aggressive, dynamic playing style that balances very nicely with Richards tone.
