Jan de Vries argues that in the long 18th century (1650-1850) England went through a fundamental change that laid the foundation for the Industrial Revolution. This transition was lead by households and the Western European Marriage Pattern (EMP) that allowed productive young workers to save and invest their income in a rising cycle of consumption. This really is not the first time a "former" trotskyist has proven they do not have a firm grasp of trotskysim. I will say this, folks please just read Trotsky for yourself. You will see it is merely basic Leninism. Trotsky's only fundamental addition to pre-1917 Lenin is The Theory of Permanent Revolution. I am not going to address everything I have a disagreement. I will only point out that your assertion about Trotsky's views of the peasantry and workers are fundamentally wrong. You are actually misunderstanding the theory of Permanent revolution and Lenin's original disagreement with the Mensheviks. The theory of Permanent revolution asserts that in backwards colonial nations, only the proletariat can lead a bourgeois democratic revolution through an alliance of the peasantry because the bourgeoisie are tied to international capitalism and the aristocracy and thus have arrived too late to play an independent and thus revolutionary role. This revolution will then transform into a socialist or proletarian one and spill over into advanced capitalist nations (thus making it permanent). It is not a belief the proletariat should seize power alone. Please read what Trotsky actually writes on this subject, you will find he came to this conclusion in 1905 and refined it over the years. Lenin would eventually come to the same conclusion independently and that is what aided in Trotsky rejoining the party.

Peterson makes mistakes, but this guy makes mistakes too. For instance, Marx did indeed define "class" in purely economic terms, so it's reasonable to say that Marx in the Manifesto refers to "economic class struggle".

I’ve always thought that one of the best arguments against late communism is that it’s boring due to less conflict. Which isn’t enough to dissuade me (I’m a socialist) but it’s true, if there were a lot less conflict then life would be a lot less entertaining. If we did fix all our class antagonisms and sang kumbaya, then would we not have a lot less to fight for, a lot less to live for, and a lot less to die for.

What a fantastic explanation of trotskyism. As a Conservative I have been educating myself in socialism to have a better understanding of why people with in Britain want to devalue and demolish the great work that Britain itself has had on our shores and the world. Britain does not need socialism it needs cohesion. All socialism is doing is dividing nations where we should be embracing each other to better understand difference to create a stronger cohesion and change for our future.

Peasants are like small business owners, they aspire to be lords of their own domain, you can have a revolution with them against the land owners but then you will eventually have to deal with them unless you suppress them with an iron boot. Far better to align with the intellectual bourgeois and socialise capitalism.
