Zachary Detrick - Surprised by Joy, for solo oboe
The reason it is so short is because we were asked to write one-minute pieces.
Surprised by Joy takes its name from C.S. Lewis's autobiography.

Great job figuring out this holy grail of incredible tunes, and well done playing it! I might give it a shot learning how to play it as well - expect to hear back from me in about 15-20 years 👍
Bro! I hadn't seen this till today, great job! Gives me chills.
2nd mov.Always excites.
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
Worthy of Laudation.
If Ludwig van Beethoven could of heard this in his later years, he would of been very very very greatful! 🎶 🎶 🎶
Very nice
Like Koyaanisqatsi condensed. Powerful stuff, you should be a household name!
Art Bears to infinity! love it :)
That was exceptional! Your performance really drives home how complicated and seemingly cut-up the Cardiacs compositions were. My cap is at maximum doff.
Inspired composition. John Cage vibe taken to the next level.
Michael Sheppard and Choo Choo Hu really nailed this performance! So expressively played. Someone needs to publish this piece for wider distribution.
This is unbelievable lol
Oh my gosh one of my favorite songs!!! Thank you!
file pls
Bravo - writing engaging solo music for a single line instrument of this kind is uniquely challenging. Now I want to climb Katahdin!
An interestingly different and refreshing take 0n a poem from one of my favourite books! thank you Zach
thanks!
Awesome work!
Thank you Katie!
Love it 😍🌼
Thank you Berend!
This is fantastic! I love how you used the woodwinds.
Thank you so much Joe!
How can you listen to this and not smile ear to ear? What a trip!!
Peabody orchestra really made this piece exciting! Great playing all around
Such a thrill ride! Amazing colours and orchestration!! Love it! Please bless us with more like this!
Playful and evocative -a magical piece!
Would you be able to show how to play the song ?
Thats the way we all go.
As a keys player, I wouldn't go near this track, too hard! Well done!
really? I would say it's one of their easiest songs, it's pretty slow and it's mostly chords, no licks or tricky rhythms
@@zacharydetrick7428 It's remembering all the chord variations and weird tempo shifts. You did really well.
HELL YES
I love this. Your aural imagination is extraordinary! Bravo!
Where can we get the sheet music?
check video description
So haunting and evocative! Love it...
I added this in my 1082-list, between the sea by Debussy and the symphonie 9 by Dvorak 🙂
Those are odd bedfellows but I appreciate it. You should try listening to more 20th century music besides Debussy.
yes this is a good advice but i have 5 pages for classical music, 2 for modern, 2 for contemporary i mean after 1945
@@zacharydetrick7428 i am an amateur pianist too and i hardly find easy contemporary pieces for piano except jatekok
@@TempodiPiano How about In A Landscape (1948) by John Cage
@@TempodiPiano kurtag is great though!
thanks!!!! it's good to see someone transcribing HATN 50 years later..this is the respect this music deserves
maaaan this was the video I ve been looking for
Really groovy. Y'all have a pretty trippin' scene over there in Baltimore. So if that's a quarter tone tuned piano, how are you playing "Autumn Leaves"? Do you have tendrils for fingers?
I wouldn't know too much about the Baltimore "scene", I'm just a student at Peabody. The "quarter tone pianos" are really just the grand piano that is tuned normally and the upright piano which is 1/4-tone flat.
Thank you so much for posting this great rendition. It's a beautiful song and you played it wonderfully.
I appreciate this..I just listened to The World as Will and Idea a few months ago on audiobook for the first time. This is a very different aural experience haha of his words.
Origins of sociology had me rolling, class act man.
Thanks man
I did. I listened to the whole thing twice, the second time without watching, just listening. I get where it is coming from, I created pieces with a similar intent/result as a composition student. Using 'ironic' quotes, layered texts, detuned instruments (no quarter tone pianos available), Cagean chance decisions and so on. I listened to a lot of Webern Stravinsky, Cage, Partch, Henrys: Cowell and Cow, Bartok and Shostakovitch etc I didn't pursue composition, probably just as well. But I still listen the hell out of stuff!
Thanks man
Being a longtime Cardiacs fan, I could not pass by without praising you. Thats is awesome, man!
whoa
cool!

Mind-blowing!
LAUDATION
Excellent! Some transcriptions of Soft Machine (especially "Third" and "Fourth" era) would be good, too!
Great! Thank you!
Really makes you wanna SHAKE SHAKE
Fantastic! Do you transcribe them yourself?
yes!
