Allis Chalmers 7020 Tractor Air Conditioning - Results from Actual Use
Everyone who has operated this tractor has been comfortable, even on days as hot as 95°F (35°C). It was slightly cooler (84°F, 29°C) on the day this video was recorded, and those operating the tractor were able to reduce the in-cab blower speed while still remaining comfortable. The original in-cab thermostatic control also works well, cycling the system on and off as needed.
No doubt the system is under heavy load -- there is little insulation in the cab, and tremendous amounts of heat coming from not only the sun, but also the engine and transmission in the tractor. The cab becomes uncomfortably hot within minutes of shutting off the air conditioner.
One person who remembers operating these tractors when new says the system is performing every bit as well as it did back then. Even though I'd still like to get superheat and subcooling numbers from it, everyone who has operated it so far has been pleased with the A/C system's performance.
Oh! For whatever they are worth, I have some show notes! I edited this video using LumaFusion on an iPhone SE 3 and uploaded it with the phone in my pocket while I took a long bicycle ride. Although things started out well enough with the first 1/3 of the video uploading in minutes, this soon proved that we totally aren't living in the future yet. Uploading the rest of it took all day, made the iPhone behave as though maybe its TCP/IP stack was kind of broken and also caused it to get quite hot. It did, however, ultimately upload the whole video after several hours.
Maybe I'm being too critical. Even as recently as ten years ago (relative to the date of this video's upload), I think it fair to say that editing and uploading high definition or better quality video from a cellular phone was still the stuff of the future.

"My Window Air Conditioner Stopped Working!"

We've had some very hot days. During one of them, this window air conditioner stopped working and started blowing hot air into the room. Will a desperately needed coil cleaning fix it? It's been several weeks since this was recorded, and this air conditioner has not acted up again. I would still like to remove it from the window for a proper cleaning. I am not sure if the owner will go for that...

People who have reworked the A/C system on other Allis-Chalmers 7020 tractors have reported varying amounts of refrigerant providing satisfactory performance from as little as two and a half pounds to slightly over three. My 8300 won't turn on... I dont know what it is the problem, Power supply is ok, cables seems to be ok just unplugg evertyhing and replug in. Same light led is ON when Power supply is plugged to the board. Maybe the power button at front is messing around but he's just too damn hide in the chasis no way to acces to that. I didn't see some jumper to power on board. I just spray some alcohol and air to clean the button and i get nothing from that. Any suggestion?

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill Před 3 dny

      Some diagnosis will be required. The front panel button probably isn't the problem. How did you test the power supply? Dell used good quality, underrated power supplies in these, but the youngest examples are now at least twenty years old. Make a note of where all the wires from the power supply are plugged in. Disconnect them. Not all will be plugged in, which is fine. Find the big connector that was plugged into the motherboard. With the power supply connected to an outlet that you know to work, take a paper clip and short between the green wire in the large connector and one of the black wires. (There is no danger in doing this.) While not a complete test, if the power supply fan runs, it's probably good. Remove the paper clip from the two wires. If you need a new one, the power supply is a standard ATX type. (Older Dell systems used nonstandard power wiring, but this is not one of them. However, the lack of an opening in the case for the on/off switch that many computer supplies have can make life interesting.) Buy a good quality power supply from a reputable maker, of at least 400 watts capacity. If you have to modify the case, take *everything* out of it first and clean up any metal filings *very* thoroughly! Should the power supply check out, reconnect the wiring exactly as it was. It's time to simplify the system configuration. Remove every expansion card except the video card. Remove every memory module except for one. Disconnect any disk drives from the motherboard. Try powering on the system. If it now works, add one device at a time until it doesn't. If the computer keeps working after everything is back in place, you've just found out that sometimes after many years, electrical contacts need to be reseated. If you find damaged components on something, some are repairable and others not. Your Dimension 8300 was manufactured during a time when capacitors were made using a defective formula. Many of them later failed. It's been my experience that this usually won't cause the Dimension 8300 to stop working entirely, but it may become unstable. Capacitors are cheap and can be replaced, though soldering is required and it's not a job I'd recommend if you're new to soldering.

      I strapped the tiny X-10 video camera to a blade on my ceiling fan. The X-10 video sender was strapped to a different blade and its battery pack to yet another. I soon discovered that with the fan running, the signal wasn't strong enough to be reliably picked up in the basement studio. I moved the receiver upstairs and ran a 100 foot composite video cable down to the studio. The idea was to send live video from the perspective of a blade on the running fan. It worked perfectly. The Chinese video senders didn't work anywhere near as well, and I think they got donated to a thrift store years ago. Only one person ever guessed correctly, which you can find in the comments if you want to.

Seeing greenery in all the paddocks with grass being cut kinda blew my mind ... but then again, I've been in Scandinavia in the (wet) Summer and seen "tractor eggs" in the paddocks there (hay bales wrapped in white plastic), so I guess they cope. While I'm not across the hay market, I imagine in places where it is either consistently wet or there is good access to water for irrigation, you might grow several times across the year to service demand.

The hay can then be used during the drier months of the year when the grass stops growing and the animals still need feeding. Alternatively, it can be quite a valuable thing to produce as a "crop" - during the last drought in Australia, which encompassed much of the country, hay prices were astronomical, and farmers were paying huge amounts of money to truck it across the country. In more normal times, the farms specialising in hay have contracts to supply large stations, or stockfeed suppliers.

    I know they don't want you drilling holes in the bottom, but I have found they stay a lot cleaner if you drill a hole or two but obviously avoiding the condenser and lines. I haven't really noticed too much of an efficiency difference. Great video, Hopefully he gets some decent cooling for the rest of the summer.

    After high school in 1971 I got my first full time job at a small family owned heating and air conditioning company. Before they hired me there were only 3 employees. There were a lot of different window unit brands that we serviced, but we only sold the Fedders brand. Is Fedders still around? During the summer wash outs were one of the main things we did. We used to remove the AC from its housing and take it outside, remove the shrouds from around the evaporator and condenser coils, oil the motors that had oil cups, wrap the motor in plastic to keep it dry and clean the whole air conditioner. We didn’t use coil cleaner, we used powdered Tide laundry detergent and a water hose. Luckily most of the A C’s had a slide out chassis in those days, but there were a few where we had to remove the whole AC unit from the window to do a wash out. The A C’s in restaurants were the worst. Their evaporator coils would get clogged up with grease. It took a lot of Tide to clean them! When I got that job I thought I wanted to learn how to be a heat and air technician. I became one hell of a duct mechanic! It was all metal duct that had to be cut, screwed together and wrapped with fiberglass insulation There was no such thing as flex duct in those days. It meant working mostly in hot attics that felt like saunas though there were installations where we got to crawl around under houses in the dirt. We had a choice of either our right ear or our left ear in the dirt. At least it was cooler! Where I lived in North Florida the water table was too high for basements. In the winter we serviced and cleaned soot from oil fired space heaters, floor furnaces, and central heat furnaces. I lasted 2 years at that job but found out that the heat and air business wasn’t for me! I didn’t hear the chirping sound you were talking about, but I used to have a 2002 Ford Ranger with a 3.0 V6 engine that started making a chirping noise. It turned out to be the bearings on the camshaft position sensor that fits into the engine where the distributor used to be. It was an easy fix.

    For keeping hot water hot, a large vacuum insulated container does the job quite well.
