    Love your videos! I’ve been learning to oil paint and you’ve helped me with glazing IMMENSELY- may I ask what medium you use?? I feel like my first layers have too much linseed oil and I’m concerned about having to use A LOT in the glazes to prevent cracking 😅

    • @mattharveyart
      @mattharveyart Před 4 měsíci

      Hi thanks I’m so glad they have helped! At the moment I use water mixable linseed oil with some walnut alkyd to speed drying, linseed 12 parts - alkyd 1 part roughly. I don’t use any mineral spirits so this medium is ‘fat’ all the way through from first layer to last and won’t crack. I don’t think you have to worry if it’s linseed on top of linseed. It’s when you use thinner layers of mineral spirits on top of linseed that you need to worry. You don’t need to add more linseed as you build layers just keep it the same. That works for me

    hey Matt great stuff..just wondering about the use of opaque colors for glazing, cad red, etc...others have told me not to use them, but they seem to be fine here, am i missing something? thx

    • @mattharveyart
      @mattharveyart Před 4 měsíci

      Hi Dan thanks I don’t know it depends what you define as glazing and for some that might mean only using transparent colours. You could say I’m using so called velaturas which are thin layers, that for simplicity I call glazes, with white or opaque colours added. But it’s all about definition and different interpretations of oil painting techniques. I just try to find something that works in a given painting and don’t like being bound by rules which sometimes feel dogmatic to me. An academic painter encouraged me to use cad red in glazes. In short you can see here that it works fine. Cheers, matt

    Matt, I have a question.do you use burnt umber as your black? I found blacks on my portraits don't work at all.makes them cartoonish.I use burnt umber with Crimson or crimson and gree. Or blue and crimsons.blacks are a big no with me.maybe I am doing it wrong?

    • @mattharveyart
      @mattharveyart Před 5 měsíci

      Hi Patricio I find working with blacks difficult but they work well as underpainting or even in glazes for shadows in hair. You could try mixing them with crimson as I was advised by an academic painter. This definitely deepens their effect. Burnt umber with a ultramarine blue makes a nice deep black . It all depends on context. I think blacks showing through further glazes are very beautiful. I like ivory black personally and I don’t use others. I don’t know how to post an image here but I’ve got one showing this glazing and will put it in my Instagram @mattharveyart

    Hi. Matt.I have a question.I've heard some painters saying the glazing is only for the shadows, and opaque for the lights. What is your view on this topic?

    • @mattharveyart
      @mattharveyart Před 6 měsíci

      Hi thanks for asking. I use glazes of half pastes for the lights as they brighten lights in the same way darker glazes deepen shadows. Im very sceptical about anyone talking of ‘rules’ in art or painting, there are no rules, only painting, so I don’t like it when people say these kinds of statements. Picasso said you can’t teach technique. What does that mean? I think it means we all have our own unique sensibilities and we can express them more fully when we are not bound by rules. My half pastes (colour mixed with white) can be more or less opaque depending on the painting I’m doing. I really like the way I can brighten lights by going over them with glazes of half pastes, up to pure white if necessary, even to 100% opacity sometimes. It all depends on the needs of a particular painting
