Hello mate, I’m having the exact same issue as you with the exact symptoms. I’ve heard of a couple of other people with the same issues also. It’s strange that multiple people in different parts of the country have the exact same issues. I’m completely stumped as to what to do to be honest. Local vets don’t want to know and there aren’t any koi vets in my area. I’ve topically treated / pp’d / Virkon aquatic’d along with Acrivlavin and I’ve also used the Ozone gel. This kills the rot and then it appears in another place. Like yourself, I’m starting to loose hope now and thinking of culling the lot and making some improvements to the pond and starting again next spring. Good luck with your koi and hopefully we can come through the other side of this.

Best filter ever. My dad has had his pond for about 40 years and he has always struggled with keeping the water cleat. I got him one of these and the pond has never looked clearer!

It is extremely unfortunate that such problems still occur at this time of year. In Japan, we usually avoid this problem by not adding any new KOI during the feeding period and leaving it until autumn, but isn't it normal over there to add KOI regardless of the season?

Hope you get it sorted but I had the same with my koi I ended up euthanize the lot and sterilised the pond and filtration but then ripped it all out to be sure nothing was lingering it's the way I went but we do things differently the pond is rebuild now and all is good 👍

I think you are in a catch 22 situation. Starting up a completely new system with fresh water and no beneficial bacteria in the filter will only stress the koi even more, adding to the negative situation, but filling it with original pond water, will only transfer any bad bacteria like aeromonas or pseudomonas to that new system and then you’d have two systems with the same problem. If the bacteria are already in the koi’s system, then no amount of external treatments will work and that’s were IV antibiotics need to be administered and these are hard to get hold of. Using CT or virkon will only lower the levels of bad bacteria, but will also lower the levels of beneficial bacteria, which can then also allow the bad bacteria to get an even stronger hold over the system, if they recover quicker than the beneficial bacteria. Dosing the pond with salt may help alleviate the stress factors on the koi, which may help, but this can then restrict the products that you could use in this situation. I’ve heard good things about ozone gel as a topical treatment, but this has to be used carefully as with most things ozone related. Hope this info helps, you will get on top of it eventually and I’m sure there’s lot of other koi keepers out there that will add their thoughts and ideas, which will help you beat this thing. 🤞

Hi sorry to here about your fish I’ve had the same problem and lost nearly all my fish tried lots of treatments I changed all the water in the pond and started again and that seemed to help but good luck

You might find the bacterial infection is in all your fish now. You could isolate but cycling a new filter with those bacterial problems will accelerate their problems. If you could use a cycled filter with a 50/50 mix pond and clean water isolate them would be ideal.

Wow that’s rough to deal with. I know how stressful it is. As Ive commented before, I’ve been dealing with bacterial issues myself. I hate having to treat the wounds. They take a long time to heal. I have a shusui with a similar wound as your ki matsuba. It has taken 3 months so far but it is healing slowly. You know what I did… I got a 110gallon stock tank and put all 4 of my poorly koi in it. Put a small pressure filter and an air stone in it. Salted it up to .30-.50%. Treat their wounds every week or so and kept the water clean. Put some bacterial treatment in and let it ride. I figured its much easier to maintain a small body of water and much easier to treat the wounds. I can see the fish easier to watch their progress. I thought “if they survive, they survive. If not I tried”. It seems to be working and it’s way less stressful.

Wish to god I did not swap my multi bay for nexus 300 series! Absolutely shite on mechanical side. Fine particles are terrible for such a high priced filter.

Hi Sharpey. I 've installed my Nexus 220 after a tempest filter with a waterfall blade. The pond pump is set at 50% but I'm only getting a low flow in the outlet of the nexus. Even when I cut off the flow to the water blade it's still slow flow. Is there anything that I've missed doing.?

Hi Sharpy. Many thanks for the info on installation of the Nexus 220 I've just completed my installation and I'm very pleased with the result i just need to buy a ball valve to reduce the flow to the waterfall.

Get an ozone generator from eco filtration, bud I don't get any bacterial issues & if a koi damages itself, they heal so much quicker & to a high standard

I’ve had good results with Virkon but I’ve used at 5-6 times the suggested dosage on Day 1 and then the regular dose on days 2, 3, and 4. I then do exactly the same after filter clean and water changes. I run this cycle 2-3 times, possibly 4. I use the Virkon powder as you get twice as much for the same price, it’s exactly the same except it doesn’t have the anti foaming agent so can cause slight foaming for an hour or two, but saves a lot of money! I’ve found this regime has helped me but you might want to try treating with something like Alparex by Colombo first which is quite effective against fungal infection’s! Good luck!

Totally get this,only coming out of the same situation. Firstly I did a pp dip to help stop it's progression, virkon in the main pond to cut down on any bad bacteria and along with this I have done two daily dips in a .09% salt solution with Acriflavin in it at a higher dose than stated on the bottle. Took about a week and a half for it to change from the reddening to white and starting to heal now. Did a second full dose of the virkon a week later to stay ontop of things till the pond settles down again. Left the affected koi in the salt/Acriflavin mix for a good hour -hour and a half. Obviously keep an eye as they will look like they are toppling over,but once they right themselves, leave them for as long as possible for it to help kill off the bacteria and the finrot. By doing this you are treating the pond with antibac with the vircon and harder with the salt and Acriflavin which is a antibacterial as well along with the salts healing powers. Gives them a double hit and didn't do mine any harm . Hope some of this gives you help. And stay with it and the pp will stop the rot in its tracks and before it reaches too deep. I appreciate your updates on the koi. As I’ve commented before, I am having bacterial issues myself so it helps to see what works and what doesnt. I now have a small quarantine tank which makes things much easier for treating the poorly koi. Easier to catch and less expensive on treatments in a smaller body of water. I hope your koi mend up soon (cross fingers). Keep the updates coming.

How you finding virkon i used it with salt fish wasnt keep i have bacterial issues ive lost 4 fish all over 60cm this year to certain things

I hope you get this sorted mate. I had a similar thing happen to my pond. I kulled all that showed signs and fully sterilised my whole system. Fish were removed and kept in salt at .9 for 5 days and pp bathed every day for 3 days. 🤞

I went through roughly the same thing a year a go. I was having fin rot, raised scales, excess mucus, sores and red patches. I couldn't work out what it was. The water was testing ok with my API liquid tests or so I thought. I bought a blue lab guardian because all the cool youtubers had one and tbh they are a great bit of kit. It turned out that my fish were swimming around in pond water with zero KH and a PH of 6.5- 6.7 so my fish had acidosis from what I can tell. This is despite my API tests showing a KH of 5-6 and PH of 7.6. I got some bicarb in there straight away and got the ph up to 7.1 but they still weren't happy. Next day I raised it a bit more and eventually settle on 7.6 over a few days. Over the next 4-8 weeks keeping the pond dosed with bicarb to keep a stable PH all my fish except 1 all made a full recovery with the help of some Tamodine and Virkon tablets. I put 5 scoops of bicarb in every 5 days now and everything is great, the water is lovely. I can watch my PH drop with the bluelab guardian and when it gets to 7.3 at midday (because it drops at night anyway) I add bicarb. Might not be what you are going through but thought I would share. All the best, hope you get to the bottom of it.

That’s really sad to have to put a pet down. Been there many times. But you’re right, the koi is probably suffering with not a high likelihood of recovery. And not to mention, it’s better for the health of the other koi. Nevertheless it’s always a difficult decision to have to make. Hopefully the sanke/showa recovers and you get the issue sorted with the virkon.

Hey up sharpey mate I know exactly how you feel bud been there 😢 bud what Davey said from black country koi said is your best option right now but my advice would be to contact Paula find out exactly what your dealing with. Because all these things your doing at the moment might be making things better but they could also be making them worse as your treating blind at the moment 👍 so contact Paula find out what the issue is then she will also tell ya best treatment regime for them 👍😊

Sharpy mate , my advise to you is to trim the infected fins and paint pp paiste onto it , it will cortarize the cut and allow it to heal and grow back , the only part that wont re grow is a main outside ray but the rest should recover fine . Im not garenteeing its gonna work on all the issues but is a great way to kill fin rot as long as you make sure you remove all the infected area . Good luck buddy 👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
