I don't remember this very well: was it the Italians or the Germans they ambushed ? Because in WWII the Middle East battles were against the Italians who invaded Abyssinia (Ethiopia) and Britain/ France were defending their colonies
Both. The british beat the Italians back from Eqypt. Later the germans were in north africa too under Rommel's Afrika corp. This was a raid on a german Luftwaffee base in north africa.

@@ronki23 France had surrendured and was under german occupation. There were still free french, but it was mostly British and commonwealth V Italians and the German Afrika Corps in north africa from 1940 to 1943.

Les SAS de ce raid contenaient des Français aussi. Bien sur qu’ils étaient presque tous des Anglais mais il y en avait une demi-douzaine de Français parmi eux.
@@tony9146 les britanniques ont toujours été les plus dures rivaux des français , notre histoire militaire est intimement lié a eux , ils sont devenus très féroce et endursis aux contacts des français , je suis français et j'ai toujours respecté les britanniques , sur le plan militaire des sciences et la culture ,et quand les français se lient aux britanniques ont éclatent la terre entière .
Les britanniques et les français sont des peuples très féroces beaucoup plus que les allemands .

Apparently the SAS attacked an air base in similar fashion during Desert Storm. Everyone's gangsta until the SAS decides to roll up to your base with .50 caliber machine guns and alot of armor piercing rounds.

The SAS men were obviously defending themselves from a far superior force.
It is a military installation. If they did not have proper guard that's their problem. Not SAS's. How it is different if there was a night airstrike or offshore bombardment from the navy. The enemy would still be unarmed and oblivious.

“RAT PATROL! That was the name of it.” -S4 E6. Rat Patrol was about the Long Range Desert Group, who are featured in this and worked alongside the SAS in many of their raids. The series Archer mentioned is basically an Americanized version of what these guys are doing here. The US never did these kinds of desert raids during WWII.

Using .303 Buckingham rounds in those Lewis machine guns. Aka Incendiary
Those aren’t Lewis Guns, they are Vickers Gas Operated (Vickers K) machine guns that were originally made for the gunners seats on bombers. SAS famously repurposed them by mounting them on jeeps, although they did also utilize Lewis Guns as well. Vickers K pan mags have a strap over the top of them, somewhat similar to the 97 round pan mags used by the aircraft mounted Lewis guns in WWI.
Putting dual mount of them on a combined 2 or more jeeps, its like having a damn minigun in the 40's! They're modded to fire at aircraft gun mode rate of fire, so, really fast, being less than a foot apart each barrel, 4 of them is inescapable on level ground like an airfield in the desert like that.

They used to set diversionary explosives on oil barrel fires to blind the enemy camps night vision and cause confusion and shoot out of the dark from one side and then a flank or security party would lay down fire as they left. This has been glorified obviously. You can create a situation where it's impossible to see past the fire.
