Any time youll be out on the raft, have a fire nearby, with hot rocks, dry debris, dry clothing at hand. dont venture out into water that's over your head. It's not necessary. Your seine and gillnets are just 6 ft wide, so they can't be used in more than 5 ft deep water. It's stupid of you to risk being in/on deeper water, for any reason. It's dumb of you to not have the fire, etc, ready to hand if you get soaked. that way, you can remove your wet clothing, dry off dry debris, get into dry clothes and the bivy, wring out your wet clothing, wrap each wet item around a hot rock and set it where the one way projected heat of the Siberian fire lays ("aimed at each other, 6 ft apart) will warm and dry them (and you, of course. ) This way, youll be wet and cold for at most 10 minutes. and probably only 5 minutes. You can/should be swimming and running in place vigorously in that time, so as to generate metabolic heat, until you can get between those fires and get dry,

the pontoon raft does not tie up your tarp. The tarp that they give you is VERY fragile, easily torn, and then your "skin-boat" sinks, with and all of your stuff falling into very cold water. the raft cannot be sunk, overturned by a rogue wave, or swamped. Tie a lanyard to the shovel and tie yourself to the raft. They give you a life vest that CAN become one of your 4 pontoons, if you want to wear one of the coveralls. I suggest that when on the raft, you only wear the reflective tyvek bivy and one set of longjohns, with dry debris between you. Then if you get soaked, you'll still have dry clothing to put on. and you can just shake the water off of the bivy. The bivy has full zippers, so it can be opened flat, worn as a poncho, or just wrap it around you. Can't do any of that with a sleeping bag. Sleeping bags are ruined if they get soaked, at least, they are so until you can get to a laundromat.

You can make a fine pontoon outrigger raft in one day. You can make a paddle-handle for the Cold Steel shovel in one hour and it will also serve as a vertical ice-chipper and post-hole digger. What you do, is while still at home, water proof spray the 3 sets of coveralls and the backpack. In a very few hours, you can stuff those items with dry debris, sew and tape the seams and lash them to the log frame of the raft. You only need 8 small logs to make the raft, so you can harvest them in 1-2 hours and then assemble them into the frame in a couple of hours. The frame only weighs 80 lbs at most. So, if you want, you can assemble the frame in camp. Get inside of the two keel-logs pick up the raft frame and walk with it. All of the assembly work of the raft and the net-weaving can be done by fire-light. So use your day-hours for something that DOES require daylight.

Bury some coals and charcoal in an ashes-pit and the fire will remain "alive' for 12+ hours. You dont want or need the ferrorod. All you need to do is use the rust from your shovels ferrule as an accellerant and fire-roll a 2x8" strip of your shemagh. Once you have a fire, you can char some punkwood. Once you have charred punkwood, you can use any hard, sharp rock to strike sparks from the back of the carbon steel (replacement) knife blade of your modified Crunch multitool. You should not need to start more than 2-3 fires "from scratch" the entire time you are on this challenge. You need the big roll of duct tape a LOT worse than you need a ferrorod. You need the two person cotton rope hammock instead of the gillnet, paracord, snarewire and fishing kit. Saving those 3 picks lets you take the 3 lb block of salt, the ration of pemmican and the ration of GORP (trailmix) You can make 20x as much netting and cordage out of the cotton rope hammock than you're allowed to take with you as those items. and you'll catch FAR more flesh food with that netting, IF you know how to use it effectively.

for your last 2-3 weeks and to handle 0F, you need a couple of siberian fire lays, NOT in your tent, and 4 head-sized rocks. You heat the rocks from both sides for half an hour, and then move them into a row of pits under your raised bed. Surround each stone with a 2" thick layer of wood ashes. The stones will warm you by 20F degrees for 4-5 hours. At the beginning, youlll have removed several layers of clothing, cause it'll be TOO warm inside of your 3.5x3.5x, 8 ft triangular cross section tent.. As the stones cool off, don more clothing. As the stones cool even more, remove the wood ashes, a bit at a time. Smother the flames with ashes or dry, loose dirt, so the charred remains of the Siberians can easily be reignited. Put the 1-2 Alternative Swedish fire torches under a primitive shelter, to keep them (mostly) dry, The Swedes are needed to ignite the Siberians when all is wet/frozen.

in order to handle the second month of your stay, all you need to do is add a simple pole frame to the outside of your tarp and tape pole-tent. This takes at most an hour, if you've been careful to set up your camp where wood and debris are near-by. Then you cover the pole frame with a 6" thick layer of dry debris. This takes at most 2 hours. Then you use the 10x16 ft tarp that is given to everyone to cover the debris. This suffices down to 20F, given that you stuff dry debris between all of your many layers of clothing, that you have the reflective tyvek bivy and your tent is stuffed with dry debris.

it's too bad that they never learn. They never see 0F, and only see sub +20 F for 2-3 weeks. They start at 50F and it doesn' even freeze for a month. It's never lasted 7 weeks (under current rules) and they always launch in mid-sept. So they will never see mid December. For the first month, all you need or want in the way of a shelter is a debris-stuffed tent and a raised pole-bed. That way if need-be, you can easily move camp , say to a big kill., instead of wasting 2 day's effort moving the meat to your camp and taking a huge risk that at one or both ends of your journey, a pack of wolves will slopper and piss on all of you meat, putting you at risk of catching rabies if you then eat it.
