Our programs, exhibits and education initiatives provide audiences with an understanding of how communities develop, change and grow and help further develop one's sense of self, place and community.
We serve the Lake County area, with a focus on Lake Forest and Lake Bluff community history, offering more than 20 lectures and public programs a year, and several rotational exhibits. With a robust collection dating back to the 1840s, the History Center handles research requests each year from people looking for information about Lake County events, architecture, businesses, institutions and people.

The Suburban Barbecue: An American Icon
This well illustrated presentation explores the history of the American backyard barbecue, from its rustic Californian roots to its suburban-modern apotheosis. The ranch-house kitchen regularly overlooked it, the backyard was often organized around it, and social gatherings and family meals frequently focused on it. The man of the house asserted himself as its controller, while his wife performed the real labor behind the scenes. The suburban barbecue offered new opportunities for conspicuous consumerism that allowed it to stay fashionable in a transient suburban world. Barbecues offered casual, gracious, outdoor living, where everything was up-to-date for a stylish, suburban lifestyle.
Anthony Rubano is a Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer at the Illinois State Historic Preservation Office in the Department of Natural Resources. He works with historic properties under a variety of state and national programs and has consulted across the country on historic preservation and downtown design issues. He has overseen Illinois’ state and federal cultural-resource protection programs and provided architectural services to over 60 historic Illinois Main Street communities. He has taught architectural history at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Anthony earned a Master of Architecture degree with an emphasis on architectural history and preservation from the University of Illinois.

I’m amazed with Mr Robertson’s craftsmanship! His ability to create a miniature in great detail plus making his own miniature tools to use as he makes each miniature piece. It’s amazing. He’s a masterful artist in his craft. 🥰. Oh, if I had a few thousands dollars. 😊

Informative and interesting presentation
Wow 2 years and not a single comment 😮. I just watched a fascinating video onCSPAN today about female aviators during the 20s and 30s and thought it was extremely interesting. I cannot believe that so called feminists have nothing to say about this subject, even the author on CPAN was male. Anyway, very enlightening video so glad the WASPs finally recieved some recognition.

I am from Brazil .. I dream directly of an attack on a hospital. I tried to block the door of Japanese or Chinese-looking men, I tried to close the access doors to patients and I shouted to try to escape, doctors and nurses from the hospital, my memory stops at the door I remember the door, the hospital courtyard and the face of the man who took charge of the other soldiers. I started researching something about a hospital that happened something similar when I heard the story of that hospital. I passed out crying watching another video that showed veterans and when I looked at the hospital, the columns of the hospital and the garden around it were a sad thing in some way. . I hope one day to go to see the hospital in person
