I had the good fortune to see The Lion King when it came to Chicago for the first time. This opening number was glorious. But the thing that made it magnificent was the gathering of the animals. I looked down from the front row of the mezzanine and watched as an elephant came down the aisle and mounted the stage. I have no idea how many people it took to make that elephant walk but it had to be at least six. And there were giraffes, antelopes, monkeys, birds, any number of wonderful puppets (Puppets seems like such a small word to describe these animal recreations.) And my two kids were mesmerized. All in all, a wonderful afternoon in the theatre.

Animals do have hearts and souls just like us. This particular lion could’ve felt bad for the baby antelope and decided to protect him.

From the compassionate act of the lioness towards the baby calf, we can learn a lot. Whether in humans or animals, maternal love is great, and life is immensely precious. This has made me reflect on our eating habits, behind which countless lives are sacrificed. We should avoid consuming or using animals and their offspring, to express respect and protection for every life. Each small change we make can contribute to reducing the suffering in the world. 🙏❤

This is what we need more of in the world, and you don’t get this with car centric cities, because everyone’s in their own little bubble
