Narmada parikrama
Narmada Parikrama is one of the oldest tradition - almost 7000 years back Markandeya Rishi performed Narmada Parikrama. You will perhaps not believe that Markandeya Rishi performed Great Prakrima of Narmada River for 27 years. He did not cross stream of Narmada River also he did not crossed stream of any river - in all 999 rivers - merging Narmada. I have lot of information on this subject because I am one of lucky person, I could perform Narmada Parikrama covering 2700 kilometers of distance on foot. I have written a book 'Narmade Har | Har Narmade' detailing account of Narmada Parikrama which concluded in 123 days. The importance of the Narmada River as sacred is testified by the fact that the pilgrims perform a holy pilgrimage of a Parikrama or Circumambulation of the river. The Narmada Parikrama, as it is called, is considered to be a meritorious act that a pilgrim can undertake. Many sadhus (saints) and pilgrims walk on foot from the Arabian Sea at Bharuch in Gujarat, along the river, to the source in Maikal Mountains (Amarkantak hills) in Madhya Pradesh and back along the opposite bank of the river. It is a 2,600-kilometre (1,600 mi) walk. The Parikrama is also performed along the southern bank from its source (Amarkantak hills) to the mouth (Bharuch) and returning along the northern bank, and it is considered to be of the highest religious efficacy.
During the Narmada Parikrama, devotees have to pass through a place called Shulpaneshwar ki Jhari, a religious place in Gujarat with links dating back to the Mahabharata epic story. The legend says that the Pandavas returning victorious from Kurukshetra war were intercepted at Shulpaneswar by Eklavya and his group of tribal Bhils and looted them (Pandvaas) of all their belongings. Since then it is a custom that pilgrims on a Narmada Parikrama, while passing through this place, expect to be stripped of all their belongings leaving them with the bare essentials to carry on till some philonthropists give them donations on the way to carry on. With construction of the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat on the Narmada River, the Shulpaneshwar Temple has submerged under the reservoir, necessitating the pilgrims to take a circuitous route to continue on their journey.

३१ मे रोजी तंबाखु सेवन विरोधी दिन आहे , नर्मदा परिक्रमा करताना तिथे मध्य प्रदेशात गुटखा तंबाखु सेवन करणारे अगदी लहान मुलेही पाहिली . जवळपास भेटणाऱ्या प्रत्येक व्यक्तीच्या तोंडात गुटखा तंबाखु नाहीतर विडी असे दिसतच होते. आणि काही साधूंना ह्या वस्तु तिथले दुकानदार सेवा म्हणून पुरवितात हे काही मला पटले नाही , असे साधु हिंदू म्हणून मुखवटा मिरवत असतील तर हा मुखवटा फाडून फेकला पाहिजे. आणि असे साधु आणि महंत मी बरेच पाहिले कि ज्यांचा वरचा मुखवटा पाहून घ्यावा , गंध भस्म टिळे अगदी कोरून कोरून लावण्यात भरपूर वेळ घालवितात, आणि मोठया मोठ्या गाद्या मिरवितात. आणि सोबतीला सगळी व्यसने, असली लोक म्हणजे धर्माच्या नावाला कलंक आहेत. खऱ्या संन्याशाने स्वतःसाठी झोपडी सुद्धा बांधायची नसते असे शास्त्र आहे. काहीवेळा मी हाही अनुभव घेतला कि ते महंत म्हणाले इथे विंचू निघतात , आणि आपल्यासाठी हि खोली बांधण्याचे काम अर्धवट पूर्ण झाले आहे , अगदी जेमतेम एक वीत उंच कट्टा होता म्हणजे इथे विंचू साप वर चढू शकले असते म्हणून मी त्यांना म्हटले त्यांचा तिथल्या हिशोबाने पाहिला तर बंगलाच होता , तर त्या बंगल्याच्या भोवती पडवी होती , मी म्हटले आह्मी तिघे वर पडवीवर झोपू का ? तर चक्क नाही म्हणाले आणि स्वतः आत बंगल्यात जाऊन झोपले ज्याला AC होते , खिडक्या दारांना मच्छर दाणीच्या जाळ्या होत्या , आणि आह्माला सांगितले कि तुम्ही एक वीत उंचवटा असलेल्या उघड्या खोलीतच झोपायचे, वर बंगल्याची पायरी चढायची नाही,आता ठिकाण नांव लक्षात नाही पण इथे पाळलेले ससे , गाई होत्या , बंगाली बोलणारे महंत होते हि खूण. इथे विंचू आले नाहीत पण ते म्हणाले बारीक दिवा चालूच ठेवा म्हणजे काही प्राणी येणार नाहीत बाकी खोली समोरून उघडीच होती , पण एक मोठा जंगली कोळी सारखा जवळ येत होता सोबत जे आजोबा होते त्यांच्या शर्टात शिरला , तीन चार वेळा झटकला तरी पुन्हा आपली कोळ्याची स्वारी वरच चढत होती. शेवटी आजोबानी पकडून लांब नेऊन टाकले. पण असे हे हायफाय एसीवाले बंगल्यातले महंत तिकडे खूप आहेत. || जीव धोक्यात घालू नका || व्यसनात तुम्ही गुंतू नका तंबाखू तुम्ही खाऊ नका लाल पिचकारी टाकू नका रस्त्यात कोणी थुंकू नका ||१|| तंबाखू तुम्ही मळू नका तंबाखू कोणी गिळू नका तंबाखूची फक्की मारू नका कॅन्सरला नक्की करू नका ||२|| घरात सिगारेट ओढू नका धूर विषारी पसरवू नका सिगारेट कोणी ओढू नका क्षयाला जवळ करू नका ||३|| विडी , सिगारेट ओढू नका निरोगी जगणे सोडू नका श्वास मोकळा गमवू नका जीव धोक्यात घालू नका ||४|| ===================== कवी / लेखक - सुरेश रघुनाथ पित्रे . ठाणे (पश्चिम) ,
