This Toro 634 gear driven turf rotor was found just by chance at my local plumbing/hardware store. This sprinkler has a date stamp of July ‘82. According to the 1986 parts catalog. This 634 had options for a modular assembly to be applied to the side of the head to go completely automated by 24 volt with a valve in head and also could be manually turned on and off with a key thru the top flange...

Nice explanation of how this would work in a block rather than a VIH system given its normally open. It runs great, too. Showing the hydraulic control of it, though, is next level! Great way to demo a hydraulic VIH. Absolutely great! Really outstanding explanation.

Nice rotor! the golf course my parents live off of has stream rotors and rainbird 51s. I'm wondering if they are the VIH models (electric maybe?). Since I think they use a computer system to control which heads run at a certain time. I think it'd be easier to use than a valve that runs a bunch of heads like at a residential setup. I think its easier because they can just select what heads to run instead of just turning on a valve to run a zone. Thats got some good range. I have been thinking of getting a Rainbird eagle 950 series, i think the golf course there uses them too.

@@NelsonBigGunP200Fan Thank you for the comments. I think in today’s world, that pretty much everything is in electric. The toro head you had seen in the video is from 1982. At the time there still some hydraulic systems out there. So I would say (without seeing it) at your golf course location that it’s a safe bet that it’s possibly a computer electronics system with the VIH models. Good luck in getting your Rainbird eagle 950. Thanks for watching…

This makes me nostalgic. I fought the 630/650/690 gear drives and their control systems with everything I had. They were dominant in golf in the 1980’s in large portions of the country. What you have is an incredible find. You do a great job explaining in simple terms how this could be a valve-in-head or just a check valve block style sprinkler. It runs great, and you capture it really well, which isn’t easy on a long-throw sprinkler. Great subject, and a great video.

Bill, thank you for your comments! We did not have a lot of Toro turf products where I used to work. Toro was introducing the 640 series back in the 70’/80’s and they were in their infancy. The ones we did get did not hold up well at all under the constant pounding they were getting under our heavy athletic fields usage and quickly found them to be a maintenance headache. So we put back the Buckner, Thompson turf sprinklers that could take the pounding and be so much more vandal resistant. Thanks for watching!…

I built a portable sprinkler stand manifold from galvanized pipe and fittings with various size risers including 1”, 3/4” and 1/2” to accommodate whatever size I need for the particular sprinkler that I am featuring. I Many 122"s running in the yard, they due tend to clog easily but they work well; I have both labeled Febco and Buckner.... A warm greeting from Germany. Videos showing how to do it are great. In Germany, there was a company called Hydor (around 1925) that manufactured a sprinkler consisting of a pipe with nozzles that was moved by a hydraulic piston. This company was bought by Heinrich Perrot and later marketed this device as PERROT HYDOR Landregenapparat. For me, it's always exciting: who was inspired by whom? Did Hydor copy this Skinner sprinkler, or vice versa? I can supply pictures and brochures. Bill has the e-mail address.

Classic lawn spray. You got the pressure right as there is minimal misting. I like how you can see the water’s actually being spun out of the sprinkler in a tight cone. Good sized water droplets. If I had a ton of money to put into a system, I’d be tempted to do the lawn area in these just for how they look. Systems with these in them should be a part of every movie set between 1920 and 1980.

Thank you for your comments.. Yes! The Thompson heads just seem like to run fine for a very long time. That’s why I choose them for this system. It’s no wonder they were made for many decades. The original controller that was installed with this current system was a 12 station “Irritrol” controller. Before that was either a “Intermatic, Lawn Genie or Richdel” (not sure which one) electro mechanical controller when I installed the new system back in the 90’s. It has now been replaced with a newer updated controller that can be programmed and operated thru a cell phone app. It’s very convenient when checking the sprinkler operation conditions in the field without having to keep going back and fourth to the controller. Thank you for your comments. Back in the day, Charles Skinner invented the automatic oscillator to put on the skinner piping to do the movement. It was very effective in the day and yes, I do believe that it was the precursor to the modern oscillator sprinkler that you can still get today to put on your garden hose. This was a fun little project that I thought it was worth doing.

Those look oddly familiar. When I lived in my childhood home, the neighbors had these as sprays in the sides near the house. They had regular popup sprays in the front and FEBCO 1" popups near the back patio which were like the 8265 Buckner(same head) and skinner UR heads near the end of the property (brass popup full circle impacts). Thank you for sharing !

You son of a gun. You’ve done the birth of overhead irrigation from the 1800’s, and it’s your home system. Then you pulled out a Moody part that worked with this style. I had no idea they were even involved in this style of irrigation. I’m sure you’re aware that some of these were able to oscillate, too. I wonder what decade these were installed out there? I have questions. Watch your inbox. This is the best historical irrigation video. Hands down.

Thank you for your incredible compliments!! After I had bought my house back in the early 90’s, I was pretty heavily involved in a lot of irrigation industry work….My yard needed a complete redo in the sprinkler system. So when I was redoing my yard I wanted to incorporate a lot of those systems with all the various sprinkler heads from the industry I was currently working in. I loved every aspect of it at that time including servicing the “Skinner Piping Systems”. So that’s when I installed the “Skinner Piping” on the slope in my yard along with some Rainbirds on galvanized risers in the grass area and some pop up lawns sprays on others areas. I’m sure you will be seeing some of these in the future videos…..I have seen some skinner systems that did oscillate back in my childhood years. There were countless skinner line piping systems along freeway slopes in the Southern California Los Angeles area that was built in the 50’s/60’s and I remember most all of them working back in the 60’s/70’s. After that period they were slowly being phase out for other type of gear driven rotors/brass impact heads…. I have not been able to find the “Moody” swivel union in any of my catalogs. But it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. I’m sure that there other manufacturers that did as well. I may still find something in the future as for I have approximately a 2 foot stack in catalogs that I’m still going thru and often get surprised in the items there. If you looking for some particular items from different catalogs, let me know. I’m only glad to help keep the history alive in this great industry. Thanks again for your incredible comments and thanks for watching….

This something different and the little spray heads could be a lot of work like you said because of the very small inlet hole to the nozzle. When you showed the catalogs, memories came to me as I had that 1976 Moody catalog. Thank you for sharing this.

Thank you for your comments. I have noticed over the years of maintaining these types of systems, that the more the system is in continuous use, the better of not needing as much maintenance was needed. It kept the water flowing and the interior of the piping stayed cleaner. Glad you enjoyed the catalogs and thanks for watching.

Nice system! Neat little misting sprinklers, reminds me of my small brass propagation misting heads.

Do you think adding a drip filter could prevent them from clogging?

    • @oldschoolsprinklers9000
      @oldschoolsprinklers9000 Před 3 měsíci

It probably would not hurt. But usually most of the clogs come from mineral scaling from the water building up in the nozzles causing the problem. Some of it is also rust from inside the galvanized piping as well and finally believe it or not, I’ve seen ants and other insects actually crawling thru the nozzles building the nests inside clogging them up. Thanks for the great comments and thanks for watching.

Nice Rain Bird 40! I have a few of these, there are slight differences/changes with the arm/spoon and sleeve bearing.

Yes I have several other #40’s and noticed some slight variations as well. I will be posting a video of them as soon as I make some repairs them. Thanks for the comments and for watching
