What The PROS Do in EVERY Architecture Photo - Retouching Techniques
I'll share some of my techniques and thoughts behind professional architecture retouching and editing in Photoshop. This is a vital step in making sure your imagery is of the highest quality possible. To ignore it is to continue churning out average images into a sea of mediocrity. But Real Estate photographers beware - you must represent the property with honesty.
I mention the Lumenzia panel which is a cornerstone in my editing workflow. You can check it out here bit.ly/3dpGeub. It has many uses for editing and has a raft of features to help improve our architecture editing. My main use for it is with exposure blending but here I use it just to precisely lift the shadows from the tree and also show up any dust spots in the image. If you do decide to get it for exposure blending I'd recommend picking it up as a bundle along with Greg's excellent course bit.ly/3dpGeub
Beyond this editing step, we want to add polish to our photos. I do this as a batch automation either through ColorEfex Pro (bit.ly/nik-collection-dxo) or bit.ly/Luminar-NEO. Both options work very well, but to run it in an automated way you need to "clean" your photos first as shown in this editing tutorial.

    Imagine how much you would have to charge a client to do this when the vast majority of people can barely tell the difference between a photo taken on a phone camera with HDR and a professional camera with hours of editing. It requires amazing skills. But, nope, it's way too much work. Clients in my area would never pay me for this type of effort.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham Před 16 dny

      The one bit of advice I learnt after years of projecting my beliefs about what a client would or wouldn't spend was to not assume the budget of my client. This applied to weddings when initially I charged just under $1000 because I thought that was all I would pay so therefore it was all my clients would pay. I was so wrong. With every price jump I fearfully made, turned out I got better clients who were willing to pay that price. I finished in 2018 averaging $8k (nzd) per shoot. My first architecture shoot, $50 (yup, seriously). More recent ones 2-5k per job. Perhaps some people can't tell the difference between an iPhone hdr and a high-end retouch. But perhaps, they shouldn't be your client. I found when I put the quality finish into my work it organically attracted better clients who were willing to pay for better work.

    THANKS for this video! Very well done as always. However, in making small adjustments to the verticals using auto synch, the adjust DO apply to each image BUT are NOT carried over to to the merged HDR. Tried multiple times, but the HDR does not see what I did to the verticals. Also, the merged image doesn't look that different in the windows (still blown out). What did I miss? One of your videos did cover how the image may look the same, but I cannot find it (you have a LOT of videos! And that's a GOOD THING!)

    Is there a repeatable way to get the exposure of the highlight or shadow layers to match the base layer (like when you are adjusting things around 17:00? I have trouble knowing if I've matched the midtone exposure properly just eyeballing it or trying to remember what the base layer looks like. Do I need to just pick a couple points and look at the values in the histogram between the base layer and the one that I'm adjusting to try to get those midtones matching?

    Hi Anthony! Awesome video, all your videos are so well put together. You always explain things in ways that are really easy to understand and implement. I got a quick question for you, hopefully you can help me. Been a little hard to research on line. I'm getting a new pc laptop and I am finally going to get a stand alone monitor to hook up to the laptop as well. Tired of always using the laptop monitor. I use Lightroom, Photoshop and Luminar Neo for editing. I am a Real Estate Agent and do my own photos when I have homes for sale. I do not do photography for a living but love it. Question is: I want to get a 21:9 ratio (Ultrawide) monitor NOT 16:9. Minimum 2K resolution or more. Should I only get a flat ultrawide monitor or curved ultrawide. Trying to figure which is the best for photo editing. Will a curved monitor affect my editing of interior photos and exterior photos. I would prefer a curved monitor but won't get one if it is not good for photo editing. What do you think? Please let me know. Thanks for your time and help!

    I believe I heard you talk about clients either licensing the photos or them buying the photos. Does this mean that by licensing, you get to use the photos still as you wish, but if they buy them they are no longer yours? If so, I’d imagine the buying is more hefty price than licensing, correct?

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham Před měsícem

      I don't offer a "buy" option where I would then be unable to use the photos. The closest would be an exclusive license. In that case, a client would pay more to have exclusive rights to the images but I would still want to maintain the ability to use those photos for my own portfolio or marketing if I wished. I had a lucrative job offer once for a bespoke home that belonged to a famous artist but because they wanted exclusive rights and I would not be able to use those photos in any marketing myself I declined the job.

      Hi Alex, so I use a combo of software, I use Lightroom, Photoshop, Luminar Neo and colorEfex Pro. All are valuable tools. However, if I were starting out and had to pick just one, these days it'd be Neo (and they actually currently have a really good Summer sale running bit.ly/NeoSale). It's all slider-based, easy to learn and has some really useful tools for architectural/real estate work, such as the highly coveted HDR merge and now luminosity masks too. But if you're getting started its much easier than LR and PS.

    higher end architectural shoots will have the designer directing you on site. So every shot is a shot they want and they will stage it exactly how it should look. It's not really a "here a few shots pick what you like" kind of thing. that is all figured out pre-shoot. and day rates are more like $3-$5K plus usage.

    • @archiphoto
      @archiphoto Před měsícem

      Thanks man. I really appreciate the feedback. The way the system works here mans that once all parties have selected images and licensed them the income can equal or exceed the quoted day-rate you mentioned. While a designer may be present I haven't found that a rule. Perhaps it's a different set up in different countries.
