First off, a big shout out to Speed & Sprocket Cycle Works www.speedandsprocket.com for allowing me the opportunity to rescue the 1996 Specialized Ground Control in the video. I am truly grateful. It’s been a minute since my last video. Generally, I would rather be making more in depth, evergreen videos than these more conversational updates. Purely because I don't think that I'm very good at m...

@EriebyCycle You 2 are the champs at trash finds! Idk what it is but you two strike gold every time lol
@@billywood9717 I think Chris has me beat- to be fair.
Its ridiculous. I just sold the F&F to Beach Bike Warehouse. They are going to build it for a customer who is 7’8”.
@ReferenceBicycle 7'8"? That guy's in the wrong sport. Lol
Look at that steer tube lol. Definitely a XL size. Makes 700c look like 24" wheels. Great find though!
It’s like a 12” head tube. Ridiculous!
10”. I was compelled to measure it.
@ReferenceBicycle never seen one like it before. Very unique find
King of trash strikes again. Some superheros don't need capes. 😎 Keep saving the old bikes, mate 👍
Dude! Thank you as always!
@ReferenceBicycle absolutely love seeing what you find, mate!
Why... Do we collect bicycles? Why do a lot of people have more than one
Sweet little frame mate 👌
Cool
I bought the same bike brand new in July of 1993! I still own it. I went with red accents for mine, matched the outline of the lettering and I still love the look.
That’s awesome! Thanks for the comment too!

Hi I can buy a lot of bikes from you if you have big Joblot
Nice little bike 😊 I love the frame! Greetings from Croatia from Kris 😎
Stop teasing and show us the goods 😂 how ya doing mate, looking forward to the video, mate 👍
У меня такой же тока другого цвета и система лутше
Looking forward to this project
Thank you! Your video is very helpful 🙏
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for checking it out. Cheers
Bloody hell!! Wow. Cheers mate
Absolutely love it. I'm currently in the middle of a 93 Giant Cadex also with Manitou 2s, which need a rebuild. It was definitely my favorite era for mountain bikes.
That’s a killer project! Thank you!🙏
How much do i need to invest in order to restore mine the way yours looking?
I built this for my daughter, so I spent way more than on most of the builds in my other videos. There is probably USD $500 in new parts. Used parts were all from my inventory. I hope this helps. Thank you for reaching out!
I know little about them and have never owned a bike with them. Whatever approach you take will be learning for me.
Thank you, Josh!
Grew up riding and building bikes my whole childhood and never seen these but I was born in 91 🤷🏻♂️
Why does your break have a prince charles
A Prince Albert would be a bit much for CZcams.
I love the look of them. Just don't see them in the UK 👍
You are throwing away the grips, why do you not system cut it. Isn't it an easier way to remove it?
Cutting them off risks damage to the bars. I hate seeing gouged bars from someone using a box cutter to remove grips.
Why the hell are people taking away gears? Can you say cross Channing?
Definitely gotta keep an eye out for gear stealers. I wouldn’t want to cross Channing either! Thanks for checking out the video!
I have the same Nexus setup on an old Murray cruiser bike, and I love it. Not a "long-distance" bike, but a fun bike to tool around on. The 3 speed is really helpful.
Holymoly ... 🤪😛😝🤑😜🤤🤤 coming from a litespeed obed 1993 owner
🙏
Nice work! 👍 The only thing i do different when i put new tires with logo on my Bikes is to line up the logo on the opposite side of the valve stem because i think it looks more professional when the bike hangs on the wall with the valve stem at the bottom of the wheel and the logo on the top of the wheel.
Good tip!
I have a 1985 limited with mixed aftermarket parts. What is the diameter of your handelbar stem? I'm going to restore the bike and scrounging for parts. Thanks.
Nice! Unfortunately I can’t remember the details of that stem or bars. This bike was sold shortly after it was built. Best of luck with your build!
Removing material from the braking surface is not something i would want to do, the rim will wear out quicker
Material is removed from the braking surface every time the brakes are applied. The amount of material this method removes barely impacts rim life beyond normal wear. This is why manufacturers such as Mavic sell their own branded sanding blocks for this purpose. Will it wear out “quicker”? I guess that depends on your definition. Thanks for watching.
Hi! So, why couldn't you have used a handlebar with a larger bore clamp diameter and avoided the shims? Modern ones come in bore sizes of 25.4mm and 31.8mm, both with 22.2mm ends. Also, you said in a reply to me in another video that you had to bend the gap of the stem mount wider to get the bar out? Did you have to do that here? And if you did, how did you manage to do it? It would seem to require a lot of force!
This was to mount a two-piece, high rise motocross bar on a single pinch stem. Bicycle specific one-piece riser bars are available in a variety of clamp diameters. Easy enough to put a riser bar with a 25.4 clamp diameter on this stem, but I wanted to show an 7/8” (22.2) MX bar installation. I didn’t have to pry open the stem to remove the bar on this bike, but I did use a pry bar to open the stem for inserting the shims and positioning the bars. Use the same method, gently. If they are still stuck, you may have a galvanic corrosion situation (I.e. steel bars in an aluminum stem), and will have to use force to break that bond.
@@ReferenceBicycle Ok, got it, thanks. I do now see that you widened the gap slightly before dealing with the shims. So, you only did that to make it a bit easier right? In theory, the width of the new bar plus shims should have exactly fit in the original 25.4mm gap. But how did you widen the gap without damaging the metal? Just a simple pry bar of some sort? Seems like a lot of force would be needed.
Yes, just to make it easier. It barely takes any force. It only needs a tiny amount of clearance.
I’ll add that it’s very easy to damage an aluminum stem with a steel pry bar or screw driver. You need to use finesse and be careful where you place the pry bar, and how much force you apply.
@@ReferenceBicycle ok, good. I'm a weak girly man! 😊
Nice! I believe I have one of these. How the heck do you swap out the handlebars? The center compression attachment that's open on only one end and bend when you tighten the screw doesn't seem to open wide enough to be able to slide the bars out?
Glad you like it! You can remove the pinch bolt completely, and carefully pry the the relief open just enough to release the bars. I do have a video that shows how to change bars on a single pinch stem: czcams.com/video/6407HAH528A/video.htmlsi=N3G0uXYO84oBNsRH
@@ReferenceBicycle Cool! Thanks! I'll check it out. ...<5 minutes later> That's pretty much exactly what I'm aiming to do!
Excellent! Thanks for checking out my videos. 🙏
Oh man, i tried adjusting mine. I have to say its a pain in the butt to get equal tension. What is the trick?
Patience and making sure that the rollers are in the same plane as each other. Those are the most important, but there are a ton of other small details that help. I I’ll get a full video up this summer. Thanks for checking it out!
@@ReferenceBicycle thanks!
Exactly what I have been searching for days.
Thanks!
I share your love of those early hybrids. Cool stuff. I hope and trust all is well.
Thanks Josh. All is well here, and I wish the same for you!

The Rim-Tapes Job is to protect the inner Tube from getting punctured by the Nipples right or are there any more uses ? And how necessary is the Rim-Tape when you are „rebuilding“ a Wheel ? Could it be left out ?
Correct. You definitely need rim tape or a rim strip (or even electrical tape in a pinch), or you risk in inner tube puncture from head side of the nipples. I don’t recommend leaving it out. Thanks!
@@ReferenceBicycle okay, good to know. Specially when im shortly before rebuilding a Bike myself. Thank you very much and keep up the nice videos
