‘Celebration of the Divine’ (Shravanabelagola & Temples of Odisha, 7th - 12th cent) by Benoy K Behl
Online Event, India Habitat Centre, 24th August, 2024
Talk and Screening of Film Produced for Doordarshan.
By Benoy K Behl
Introduction by Sujata Chatterji 00:07; Subject Intro 02:09; Film 10:06; Talk and Q&A 33:34
With the emergence of structural temples in the plains of the Ganga, from the 5th century onwards, we see similar themes and motifs in North, Central and Eastern India. Yet, these are transformed by hands which bring the full richness of the local idiom. The temples of Odisha are a great example of the beauty and the variety introduced by the hands of the local architects and artists.
Chandragupta was the great Maurya king of the 4th century BCE and the grandfather of Emperor Ashoka. In his later years he renounced his worldly life and became a Jaina ascetic. It is at Shravanabelagola that he came to give up the bindings of his mortal body. At Shravanabelagola is a remarkable statue of Gomateshwara. This is about 60 feet high and is the largest free-standing monolithic sculpture of the world.

Beautiful sacred places, thank you so much sir
I am so glad that you have appreciated this. In fact, all that exists is sacred and these works of art help us to recognize that. My best wishes to you.
Thanks sir

Thank you. Greetings to you.
Sir is this true? As many stupas as there are in India.. Those stupas are associated with King Emperor Ashoka right sir?
There are the remains of thousands of stupas across India, spread across many centuries. Only a few of these are associated with Emperor Ashoka. My best wishes to you.
@@artnbuddhism But sir, these all stupas were built under the guidance of Ashoka Samrat, right? Please sir answer?
@@shubhamnikam2881 Some stupas of the 3rd century BCE were built under the guidance of Emperor Ashoka. However, stupas continued to be made right across the country, in the time of the rule of numerous kings, for the next 1,500 years. My best wishes to you.

Stumbling upon Sri Behl's channel is a blessing. His dedication to Buddhist art is...rock-solid. Saw an exhibition of his at IGNCA some years ago. Keep up the great work sir. Some day will have the privilege of meeting you in person. 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you very much. Your words are very kind and generous. Yes, IGNCA held my photographic exhibition on ‘Buddhist Heritage of the World’ ten years ago. HH the Dalai Lama very kindly inaugurated it and it is a very special memory. With my warmest wishes to you.
Watching this video and Mr. Behl's other videos reminds me of Plato's astute statement: "Beauty is the Splendor of the Truth (or God)" and Prophet Muhammad's saying: "God is Beauty and He Loves Beauty". Indeed, Indian art is the clearest reflection of the Brahmananda (Divine Bliss or Divine Beauty)
Thank you very much for your warm appreciation and for your fulsome understanding of the philosophy of aesthetics. Indeed, our appreciation of beauty is the recognition of the grace which underlies all of creation, a state of being which is akin to ‘Brahmananda’.
So beautiful video ❤😮
Thank you very much for your kind words.
Thanks sir 🙏🏼
Glad you liked it.
Absolutely amazing! Thank you so much!
Thank you enormously for your generous appreciation.
Why the king didn't wrote names of these rathas when he inscribed the start of work. Did the people of that time not knowing the name of deities but making such spectacular art.
These may not be the original names of the Rathas. These may have been given at a later time. The deities are within the Rathas and their names are constant. My best wishes to you.
Namaskar Benoy. Your work is truly amazing!!! I especially Love the videos on The Himalayas including in HP Chamba and I love the work on The 2nd diffusion of Buddhism and connection to west Tibet (Guge) spiti. Ladakh , Kashmir etc And ~Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo. I am from the country of NZ. But my family has an incredibly close connection to India. 5 of my siblings were born in India. 1 in Karnataka and 4 in Himachal Pradesh. My parents meet for the first time in India (in The Himalayas in Himachal in the 1970s) They lived in India for about 12-14 years (mostly in HP) I was talking often to someone from village Chango in upper kinnaur HP and I asked if they know ~Rinchen Zangpo (because I loved that my father & me walked the ancient trade roots /pilgrimage roots that he did in upper kinnaur, Spiti etc) and she Said yes he lives in a close by village and was about 30 and I said but he lived over 1000 years ago!! Haha. She then realized and I was absolutely amazed to find out that she is close friends with the daughter of the incarnation of ~Rinchen Zangpo whose name is ~Lochen Tulku Rinpoche (he is incarnation of the great Rinchen Zangpo and is I think head of Kye monasterie in Spiti.
Thank you very much for your generous appreciation and for sharing. Wonderful to know about your deep relationship with India. Yes, Lochen Tulku ji is the present reincarnation of Rinchen Zangpo. He has been my friend over the past 20 years and is a lovely person. Incidentally, while on the subject of Upper Kinnaur, the Charang Monastery is known to be among the 108 founded by Rinchen Zangpo. My best wishes to you.
