every undergroun system (metro) in the worl is automatic, driven by computer not by driver. Driver sits there only for safety, if something happens...and of course he opens and closes doors :D those are standards ;)

lol, das können sogar die alten Silberpfeile, der Fahrer ist da um zu schaun das keiner in der tür hängen bleibt oder im falle einer störung muss er auf manuell schalten bzw. notbremsungen einleiten falls erforderlich.

Die LZB sind übrigens die zwei Kabel, die in der MItte vom Gleis liegen.

In stark befahrenen Zeiten (Rush hour etc) dauert das aber zu lange. Deshalb gibt es an jeder Endsation den Schalter mit dem der Zug ohne Fahrer auf das Wendegleis fährt, wartet bis die Weichen richtig gestellt sind und wieder zurück in die Station fährt. Der Fahrer ist also nur dazu da um die Türen zu schließen und eine Notbremsung einzuleiten Anders bei der Linie U6: diese ist auf der Trasse der alten Stadtbahn errichtet und ein Umbau auf LZB wäre zu teuer, dort fährt der Fahrer noch selbst.

Die Linien U1-U4 fahren mit der so genannten Linienzugbeeinflussung (LZB). Das heißt sie fahren vollautomatisch: bleiben zentimetergenau in den Stationen stehen und fahren immer gleich schnell auf den jeweiligen abschnitten. Im Normalbetrieb fährt der Fahrer mit auf das Abstellgleis, hat dort einen eigenen kleinen Bahnsteig und geht die ~110m zu fuß auf die andere Seite. - fortsetzung siehe oben.

Man braucht auch keinen Fahrer für eine U-Bahn. Es gibt bereits etliche fahrerlose Systeme, wie zB auf der Metrolinie 14 in Paris. Technisch gesehen überhaupt kein Problem und genauso sicher wie mit Fahrer. Mit einem Flugzeug kann man das gar nicht vergleichen - die U-Bahn fährt auf Schienen und somit muss ja nur gebremst und beschleunigt werden, was automatisch ebenso gut funktioniert wie manuell.

Well to be honest, I have no idea how the trains operate outside of Austria :P The subway in Vienna operates with LZB (except the U6 which is driven manually) right. Sorry but I don't know much about BVE and things like that :P

So it operates like the MTR (including the KCR lines especially) in Hong Kong. LZB, I assume, is the German form of ATO (Automatic Train Operation), is that right? The ATO system is simulated in BVE 4 and OpenBVE. That's how I first learned about MTR/KCR.

In Vienna every type of train of the subway is controlled by the so called "Linienzugbeeinflussung" (literally: linear train influencing). So the driver has to do nothing except open and close the doors and give the order to the train to drive to the next stop. Also every final station is equipped with those automatic turn-overs. Hope you understand it :D

@CZRichie, shit, I must have had a really hard day yesterday :D of course it's U2. But I feel really sorry for the drivers. Changing direction "fully manually" was the only occasion for a little movement during their shift, now they don't move at all!! :)

@pppemo It's written on the train - it's U2 :-D This isaccording to the signs around the stations the Aspernstraße station, but if it happens on BOTH stations, it must also happen on the Karlsplatz station - which is more easily-acesible, concerning time :) but it's just awsome :-D

I don't remember which line was that, but it happened every time on end stations of this line! :)
